Me personally, if you don't have a real lip on the wheel, don't paint one.

Default What color black?!?!

OKAY...so heres my dilemma. I have this 06 slvr and want to most likely powder-coat the wheels...should I go with FLAT black, SEMIGLOSS black, or the normal GLOSS black??? I really like the idea of flat but I'd like to see some pictures of what people have of each and if anyone could give me their input it would be much appreciated!!!

I have CGM color too and i painted my wheels "graphite" and it looks good but i have been toying with the idea of going gloss or semi gloss black.

i know its not the same color car, but have a look at posts 486 and 490 (this is just on the previous page. search?). 486 has flat black and 490 has glossy. I say go semi-gloss.

Anyone ever done a hyperblack gloss look with a pink lip on OEM rims to match the STI badge color? Just thought that might look cool....

You could maybe pull off a pink pinstripe, but I'm not sure about a completely pink lip...

OK so a couple posts ago I explained how my wheels owned me:

I should have stopped spraying the red when I thought it was coming out too thick but live and learn.

Bringing them to get media blasted today and I will be starting from bare aluminum when I get them back. The will start the really fun part of completely painting the wheels, self-etching primer, red lip, and then full black coating, and face clear coating.

-Rene
Here is the current status and so far it is coming out great!

Sorry for the mix of cell pics and good digital pics

Bare Aluminum Wheel

Self-Etching Primer Wet

Self-Etching Primer Dry (holy color change)

Sprayed 3 layers of extremely thin coats of red

Taping off red lip

Cut extra tape off

Painting inside of wheel semi-gloss black

Letting dry right now before flipping and painting the face semi-gloss black

Thanks! Unfortunately pictures don't do them justice. They do look better in person. When I get the tires remounted and throw them on I will take more pictures.

wow. Rene, that looks wicked.

I dont think i am going to be able to tackle this.. .dont have an extra set of wheels to use while the stockers dry. what would be the minimum you would wait for them to dry? Just thinkin i might try sanding one weekend, then dismount clean and paint the next weekend.. Say paint Friday and mount on Sunday night. Thoughts?

HA! Here is the way I tackled this. We all know I had them media blasted because my first attempt with taping the lip the red came off with the tape. I believe this happened due to either a bad can of red that sprayed to heavy or I sprayed the red to heavy. Either way second time around this is what I did.

Friday Night:
Scuffed inside of wheel and primed (2 coats) dried for 30 minutes
Scuffed face of wheel and primed (3 coats) dried until Saturday night

Saturday Night:
Scuffed lip sprayed 3 very lite coats of red let dry until Monday night

Monday night:
Taped the lip
Tack clothed the inside of wheel hit with 2 coats of black let dry for 2 hours
Tack clothed face of wheel 2 coats of black and let dry for 15 minutes
Removed tape and sprayed 2 coats of clear.

Now like I said I will be letting them cure for 7 days before the wheel shop remounts my tires.

I will be doing them bronze (going to start cleaning them tonight) probably this weekend. but here are a couple of crappy photoshop samples I did when trying to decide on colour.

they have a little curbage and others said to check AquaCow's thread on how to fix that, but damn I dug thru a lot of chat on that thread and finally had to give up. it'd really help to have the actual step-by-step procedures in the first couple of posts. (Aqua, you did an awesome job, nonetheless!). just makes it hard to find the really helpful info.

I'll be sure to take pics of the Legacy wheels when I'm all done.
