Don't want to go through the whole thread so, has anyone painted factory 08-10 WRX wheels?

I got a quick question guys.

Does anyone suggest using Adhession Promoter or Primer before you start applying paint?

I've seen mixed methods of guys just using adhession promoter with no primer and vice versa.

I've always used primer. From my understanding, adhesion promoter is used when applying to plastics since they flex. I'm not a painter though so I could be wrong.

I just picked up my 2009 WRX two months ago and after reading through this thread decided I wanted to paint my rims. Here's what I used:

One 2.5 Ton Jack $55
Four 2 Ton Jack stands $55
Dupli-Color Primer Sealer (2 cans) $14
Dupli-Color High Performance Graphite (4 cans) $28
Dupli-Color High Performance Clear (2 cans) $14
400 grade Sand paper $10
Simple Green $6
3x5 Index Cards
Total Price = $173

1) Took all four wheels off
2) Washed with auto soap and water
3) Sprayed with Simple Green & scrubbed with a wheel brush & dish green pads
4) Washed with Soap and water again
5) Dried tires
6) 400 Grit Sandpaper rub down, probably spent 30 minutes per wheel
7) Washed with water
8) 400 Grit Sandpaper round 2, spent another 30 minutes per wheel, really got it scuffed up good.
9) Cleaned with rubbing alcohol
10) 2 Coats primer with 10 minutes in between coats, then 1 hour to dry
11) 4 Coats graphite, 10 minutes in between coats, 40 minutes to dry
12) 3 Coats clear, 15 minutes in between coats

Before Shot

All four tires cleaned, sanded & ready to paint

1st coat of Primer

1st coat of Graphite Paint

3rd coat of Graphite Paint

1st coat of clear, we over sprayed the first tire, let it sit in sun for 20 minutes, then did light coats on the rest.

All four tires freshly finished, ready to dry. I put back on my car 6 hours later.

After Shots

Nice!!! I have the same car, same color. Looking to paint my rims this summer. I was thinking the same color and im really glad you just posted this because it looks really great. Did you ever consider a bronze? not too bold, maybe the same color as the Rota Torques in bronze. I just don't want to go with the bronze and end up regretting it

Hey no problem! Since these pictures I've debadged the back and will be painting the chrome piece to match next week. One thing at a time I guess.

I've seen this car with bronze rims and they look good, but it just wasn't the look I'm going for. Sometimes I think I should of gone darker with the wheels, but I really like how they turned out.

If you were to go darker would you have gotten a different paint? or just a couple more coats?

Yes, darker paint. Saw a silver metallic paint on this thread that looked really good. I'll try and find the picture.

did it get darker the more coats you applied? I'm curious if I can just apply a few coats and then clearcoat for a lighter finish.

It definitely didn't get darker the more coats just filled out the rim better.

Painted with a base coat of PSM then I hit it with a red tint, and I don't have the paint code to it either.

Looking good! I used the exact same color on my wrx stockers simply because it was the closest color match to brake dust. Still look decent after 2 1/2 years.

I agree, those look great. You happen to know the name/brand of the paint?

Donzo,
What color is this? Looks like the perfect compromise between stock and black.

Awesome. Love the color, it would look hot as hell on a white car.

I forgot but I got it at Walmart and it's a basic graphite. I think it's Rustoleum.
