New Maserati coupe making its way to the Geneva show

More Italian sheetmetal is making its way to the annual Geneva Motor Show in the form of a new coupe from Maserati. The new car, which will likely replace the automaker’s present coupe, is penned on both the interior and exterior by longtime Ferrari/Maserati partner and legendary Italian design house Pininfarina.




Maserati is hoping the car, which hasn’t been officially named as of yet, will help it finally break even in 2007 after some 16 years of losses. The car is expected to go on sale this summer. No word yet on what engine will power the new vehicle, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it is a version of the 4.2-liter V-8 the automaker uses.

Aren't they ALL loosely part of a Fiat Italian consortium or some sort? I know that they aren't the same as Buick and Chevy and Saturn - just divisions of GM, but I was pretty sure that they were still partly under one corporate umbrella, even though, I do recall them saying that they won't be directly under Ferrari any longer.

Ferrari is not under Fiat Auto. Ferrari used to own a majority stake (or some such) in Maserati, but has since sold it to Fiat Auto. Fiat Auto is a large part of the Fiat conglomerate. Alfa Romeo, Lancia and now Maserati are part of the Auto group, however, they recently turned them into independent companies with 100% of the stock owned by Fiat Auto. I think the most tangible effect of this change would be that the vin on the car would no longer say Alfa Romeo by Fiat for example. This is a partial explanation of the new situation.

Actually I'm not entirely sure where Maserati is right now. They're mainly just a joint venture with technology sharing with Alfa Romeo. The Alfa 8C shares a lot with the Maserati 4200 and will likely be built on the same line. There was a Alfa '169' large sedan concept car spotted in Spain last week that should appear at Geneva. That car may be loosely related to the Quattroporte.
