Question license plates for my scooby

im going on 3 months now and i still havent received my license plates. every other vehicle i owned, i got them within the matter of weeks. The dealer is telling me they've done everything they can do, they sent all the paperwork out. so i call the dmv and they say things are pending blah blah blah... the dealer also told me the little temporary sticker on the window is good for 6 months, when it states only 90 days on the document itself. and i asked the dmv and they say its good for only 90 days also...
so many different answers, and still no plates and nothing resolved.

how long did it take you to get your plates? is this a normal subaru thing to wait months for these?? is there anything else i can do besides going back and fourth between the dealer/dmv?

im a little frustrated, but not mad at either places. im just concerned if i happen to get pulled over that i dont get hassled by the officer about it.

I didn't get my plates for almost 4 months for my latest car. I don't know. I never thought twice about it. Took another 2 months for me to get around to actually mounting them on the car anyhow.

It only took me a few hours to get my own plates here in NY. Dealers charge way too much for registration fees so I did my own. Less than 30 days to get my permanent plates.
The dealer probably left your sitting in a box until they got ready to take the paperwork to the DMV.

good luck, the dealer should give you another temp so you dont get a ticket.

i asked for another temp. but they keep telling me its good for 6 months. so im really confused about it. they told me to call back in another week or so to see if anything got updated with the dmv...

i dont mind not having plates. (running through toll roads for free) but sheesh, i dont want to get busted and/or hassled by the cops about it.

Ask them if they are willing to pay your fines, also you could get either the DMV to call them when you are there or have the DMV write them or you a note.
If they dont correct the situation threayen them with giving them back the car.
You are in a really consumer friendly state (california has some of the best car buying laws)
Just a couple options and I know it is time consuming, the dealer should at least buy you lunch, but dont hold your breath.

When I lived in So Cal. I got my dealer to pay for a year of registration because they didnt file my registration on time. Then the following year I got a rebate in the mail from DMV. Thank you Arnold for changing the registration fee.

And Cali takes forever to do anything. And the cops and always check up on your car with the vin #.

say i do get pulled over. and the cop runs my vin # and they see that the DMV is still "processing" paperwork for my plates/registration. will i get hassled, or get a ticket? or will the cop understand the dmv lags??

I actually got pulled over for expired tags in Tustin once. I had paid, but they never showed up. Cop ran my VIN and let me go.

i got my plates when i picked up the car through the dealer... i think the registration fee was about 150... i know its a lot but if you ever been to the DMVs in NY, you can easily spend 4 hours on line where i'm at. its not worth my time.

Expired tags are different from expired temp registration. Though they sound pretty close to the same thing.
If nothing else ask the DMV if they can give you a note or ask for an extension, or just ask the dealer to give you another temp as I mentioned before.
I didnt want you to get the wrong impression on the moderator with the expired tag.

Good luck in your situation, at least it is not that bad.

yea im definitely going to try and get another temp for 3 more months. i'll shoot for trying with the dmv first, if i get no luck there, i will tell the dealer to give me something in writing that states it is good for 6 months, since they've told me this more than 3 times today. it just seems bizarre waiting this long for some darn plates

by the way, thanks for the input gentleman

just go to the dealer and ask them to write it down for you, so if you got pulled over, just shows the cop the note that you got from dealership. let's see if they have the guts to do that...

edit : woops, didn't see you post about the notes from the dealership lol

Good luck!

it makes me mad that theres nothing we can do to speed up the process. i call the dmv, and ask the status of the LP/registration, and they keep telling me its pending.... theres no file for our paperwork, it just sits in a huge pile with many other ppls documents until someone gets around to it.

BS if you ask me

then again, im not complaining tooo much... its saving me some $ with the toll road situation =D
