Unhappy raspy ricey rattle coming from my prodrive exhaust...

ahh, alliteration is fun...

anyways, i stopped at the gas station yesterday, and heard this constant "tick" at idle coming from the back of my car, which seemed to be coming from the exhaust system...so i rev it a bit, and much to my horror, on top of it's usual roar, it made that horrible metallic chainsaw cutting into a tin can of ball bearings raspy rattle (you know, the kind cheap universal mufflers make).

so of course i was immediately panic stricken, but figured there was nothing i could do about it, and nothing looked like it was coming apart or anything, so i went on about my business and drove home.

start it up this morning, and it sounds fine...

soooooo, ummm...any ideas? could it be part of the cat breaking up, and blowing through the system?

Simon, i'm looking in your direction... don't get me wrong...i love the system, especially now that it's broken in, but i hope this racket doesn't surface again!

Is the noise definitely coming from the exhaust or just from underneath the car? You might have some loose heat shields.

Yup, probably the heat shield.

My friend's muffler on his Civic has the sound muffling packing come loose (at least that is what we both think) and his car has that rattle from inside the muffler everytime.

Since yours is gone, it probably is the heat shield.

unless the heat shield fell off I dont think it would just stop making noise over night. Unless you got some sort of magic self tightening bolts.

I have an STI exhuast and it makes that same sort of rattle. Mine only seem to do it when it is cold. This makes me think that mine is some sort of loose weld. The metal expands when it is hot and stops rattling.

Next time you notice it, try and see if it is coming from the muffler itself or some where near it.

EXHAUST LEAK...
that is most likely what you've got. Do you have borla headers? they sound terribly loud w/ a crack or hole. Or... maybe at the flange where your prodrive meets your mid pipe has a leak. Check it.

no borla headers, but there is a SMALL exhaust leak coming from the headers (i think)...and combine that with a little bit of heat shield vibration...

Default It probably IS the heat shield...

That noise is very reminiscent of heat shield problems I had with my Hondas ('88 Civic and '94 Integra). It happens to a lot of cars, but it's very common on Hondas. The solution is to reattach it with stronger brackets, or remove it altogether.

Now... it COULD be a hole in the exhaust, but my bet is still on the heat shield. It's not that the shield magically re-bolted itself. The noise only becomes prominent when the exhaust is nice and hot. So you likely WOULDN'T have noticed it first thing the next day.

Woah, a whole day of posts and you still don't believe me

Subie Gal, add my money to your wager. . . let it ride

Back to the original idea which is your heat shields . . . I cut mine off completely. I just don't park over any dried leaves or grass
