Default Traveling to Fairbanks in mid Feb

Hi guys, me and my buddy (both photographers) are planning to chase the northern lights and traveling to Fairbanks the week leading up to Valentines day. Most of our nights are booked with private tour guides taking out to the wilderness for shooting but looking for things to do during the day time. Whatever is cool for tourists to sightsee in the area during the day.

Im bringing my snowboard with me and will probably check out Mt Aurora Skiland & Moose Mtn. Someone else I know also recommended hitting up the Chena Hot Springs.

Open to other suggestions. Will be in town for 5-6 days. Thanks.

Chena Hot Springs is the place to go for sure. If you get sunny, clear skies, good visibility might wanna drive south to see Denali (McKinley) - about 2-2.5 south from Fairbanks.

Yes, based on Google maps "Fairbanks to Healy". There should be several viewpoints within 2-3 hours of driving. Not sure where exactly, but that info should be available on some website.

The state closes the gates to the viewpoints in the winter, not to say you can't just park outside the gate and walk in, just have to make sure you have snow gear since they don't plow them either =P. I drive/ride from Clear (20miles south of Nenana, 30 miles north of Healy) twice a week for work.

There have been some great northern lights out lately. Chena Hot Springs is a great drive and destination. Book a room, drive out have dinner, soak in the hotsprings and have a relaxing evening. It's about 60 miles outside of Fairbanks.

Also on Chena Hot Springs road is a Woman who runs a tourist attraction dog-mushing experience. http://justshortofmagic.com/ I went there in October and it was a neat thing to do with my family visiting from out of town. She has a yurt set up as a warming hut, and she also rents it out overnight for aurora viewing, although we didn't do that.

Like John said, we are in a cold snap right now. It's about -45 in Fairbanks, and currently no signs of it warming up any time soon. Dress for it. Be prepared if your car breaks down, won't start or gets a flat tire. Flat tires and dead batteries happen a lot in these temps.

Have fun and I hope you share some of your photographs with us in the AKIC Photography thread!

FWIW you can see Denali from Fairbanks. In the park itself you can't get far enough inside by car right now to see the mountain. There's a couple of super nice viewpoints in the state park but that's more like a 4-4.5 hour drive from Fairbanks.

On my way up I'll have a 3+ hr layover in Anchorage airport on my way to Fairbanks, is there anywhere cool to pop in and visit or some cool place to eat in the city that is a convenient cab ride away? Also does uber have service in Anchorage (im gonna assume no in Fairbanks)

No Uber that I know of. There are an abundance of cab companies up here though. They will be waiting at the airport terminal by the curb on the far side of baggage claim when your flight arrives. There's usually a queue of 5 or 6 of them waiting for each arrival. When do you come in? Where do you need to go when you get here? I'm off today and could pick you up if its not between 1pm-2pm. Let me know.

Pretty much loved all of your shots on Flickr! So glad you got to see them, they've been great this year! Sorry I couldn't make it up there, but maybe one day I'll make it down there and see what's really good elsewhere.
