Default What my car sounds like

Some have asked what my car sounds like with the Borlas, Random cat, Cobb CAI and especially the Fujitsubo muffler. I took two videos from inside the car a week and a half ago to illustrate what it sounds like. If there's enough interest, I'll make a video of the exhaust itself.

TWE Equal-length headers!

Cold startup, two acceleration runs and some drive bys:

Three more drivebys and one and a half acceleration runs:

Yup, that's Labor Days

It's a very nice boxer sound at startup, idle and any partial throttle driving. It only gets aggressive sounding, as the videos demonstrate, when I'm pushing it hard and the Cobb CAI lets the engine suck in huge gulps of air

It's pretty free-flowing with the Random cat on it, so the sound is nice. I should do another one tomorrow with cold startup and another with a warm startup and idle from head height so people can get an impression of what it sounds like. It'll probably be snowing tomorrow, but I might also be able to do a driveby if I get creative.

LoL@the turn-signal-bright-flash-bobble.

Nice sounding exhaust. I've never had my car over 5k personally. Maybe I'm just a vagina though.

Oh, forgot to mention that this car has the Cobb Street Cams too, which makes it even more aggressive sounding

Back two years ago when I had my first problems with the head gaskets/heads warping/clogging radiator, I'd actually set it up to get the engine swapped for another EJ251 instead of repairing this one because I was told one of the heads might be cracked. That replacement engine ended up having spent a lot of time around moisture without headers or covered exhaust ports, so the rings were messed up.

Instead of trying to find another engine, I had the mechanic look deeper into my engine, which resulted in finding that the heads weren't cracked, but warped slightly.

Because I had the engine out of the car and the heads off, and because Cobb was a short walk down the street, I got the Street Cams, Exedy flywheel, ACT Stage 1 clutch and Power Pulley installed while everything was pulled apart, saving a LOT on installation (Dealer/SOA paid for most of his work because he was smarter than they were). Stage 2 Cobb NA Legacy GT

Cams are the same as the RS, so they're $500:

http://cobbtuning.com/products/?id=2382

I know, It's a lot more than the Deltas, but I knew what I wanted and they were available immediately. I did need to have the valves adjusted later to make sure everything was in spec. One of the only drawbacks to ANY cams in a Subaru is that they're noticeably louder than stock. Adjusting the lash quieted them down a little, but it's still louder than stock.

Yeah, Deltas are good only if can afford the downtime to have the cams removed and reground and shipped, or if you can get a 2nd set of cams.

I didn't know you had that much work done to your BE. Are you using any piggyback with the cams or anything? I thought you had to use one...

No piggyback. Everything I've done is within what the ECU can tolerate. I do get a CEL if I'm over 50-55 with a load, like the freeway onramp or going uphill. It goes away in 100 miles or so. No big deal.

I'm putting together another video of the car at startup from outside, driving around with another few acceleration runs and some slow drivebys so that people (and me) know what it sounds like outside. Expect it in an hour from now or so.

Sounds really good. The car kind of sounds like my new setup, especially the part that it doesn't hit a rumble until like 2000 rpms (lower than that its just a single note).

Pretty damn quick for a car that big too. Is the clicking the cams?

The ticking you hear around the engine is the effect the cams have on noise. It's quieter now than it was, and I've sorta gotten used to it.

You're welcome fibuz :P

I added a fourth video of three drivebys at three locations and one and a half acceleration runs. The car sounds a little different when the CEL/MIL is off, and my TWE EL headers are due any time, so I figured I'd get it while it's sounding it's unequal best.

Windows rolled down for the driving. Love the quality of the mic on this cam (Fuji F10).

Take into account that I'm at ~4500ft elevation, which isn't helping.

It always feels faster when actually accelerating than watching the speedo and tach.

I've never recorded a hard launch from a dead stop, mostly because I don't do that sort of thing. It's mostly for the sound, less so for the rate of acceleration
