Default dash swap and motor swap questions

do you have to swap the dashes when you do a motor swap. i have a 97 l and like the way my dash looks. i have no problems doing wiring work since ive done motor swaps before but just wanted to know since this will be my first subaru swap.

also with the motor swap. i have two optionss from my friend. i still have to see what versions these are but he has an sti motor and a wrx motor. just need to know since i have an 97 L do i need the rear diff. i know the ration for the 97 up 5sp is like 4.11 or something like that. do i need to change that up for the wrx and sti?

yes you need the rear diff that matches the final drive ratio of the tranny. And no you dont need the dash. You can splice the engine into your exsiting dash. If you get a drivetrain from 97 it should be plug and play with your dash. I think even 94-97 engine will be plug and play with your dash. Make sure you get ALL of the wiring.

i did a V4 STi swap. i wish my car was a 97+ for the correct dash/cluster fitment. my 95 L has a different dash, cluster bezel, etc and dosen't mate with the newer cluster. they have a different angle completely.

the wrx/sti V4's have 4.444:1 FD ratio. and get the diff from it is possible. it will be a LSD most likely. theres some usdm cars that have that FD, but not too many. so it may be easier to source from the clip/engine supplier and get it shipped altogether on one bill.

good luck!

You have to do something in order to get speedo to work. 98 and older use cable speedo and sti is electronic signal.

First off, 93-97 is a cable speedo, 98 is electric, but requires the cluster to interpret a signal, 99+ is fully electronic.

Now that I've got that out of the way, its very simple to wire up a electric speedo ecu in a car with a cable speedo - just tap the signal from the cluster harness, where the stock ecu in a cable speedo car gets its signal from.
