Default Subaru Dominates Redline Time Attack

Subaru Dominates Redline Time Attack
By Travis Geny, Subiesport Magazine

Once again Subaru dominates the Redline Time Attack proving that blistering speed is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

The STI of Crawford Performance piloted by Rus Warr, left the Tuning Tech EVO VIII, driven by Paul Gerrard and the Evasive Motorsport EVO, driven by Robert Walker, squarely one second adrift of the 1:11.515 lap time set by Warr around the 1.45-mile 13-turn California Speedway. This time was fast enough to take the overall Limited/Modified title for the event.

“We ran in the modified class and did really well,” said Quirt Crawford. “We dominated the class.”

In fact, the wide body STI proved to be so effective, it would go on to post the fourth fastest time of the day and take second in the Unlimited AWD class with a 1:10.318 lap time behind the featherweight carbon-fiber wide-body AMS EVO.

“Tanner Foust wanted to run in the Unlimited Class even though it wasn’t prepped for that class,” Said Quirt. “We were running the limited rubber and we did really well, almost breaking into the sub 10 second club.” A sub 1:10 lap is considered an exceedingly quick lap at the speedway, which is not usually in reach of a full-interior street car.

Indeed, the Crawford car sports a full interior and is driven to and from the events it competes in, yet, it still has the speed to nip at the heels of purpose-built machinery.

The Crawford STI uses off the shelf components to make over 450whp, which is controlled by the stock ECU with an ECUTek reflash, tuned by I-Speed.

After the event, SRT USA driver, Ken Block, took the car out for a few hot laps around the track.
Time attack is getting more recognition as the new hot motorsport around the United States. While not true “wheel to wheel” racing, drivers must still contend with the track, and each other, in an attempt to post the fastest lap time. Car setup and driver skills are crucial in Time Attack as each team has a limited amount of time in which to post their laps.

The next Redline event will be held at Buttonwillow on April 28 and 29. More info: http://www.redlinetimeattack.com

For more Subaru Time Attack action, make the trek to Subiefest on April 7, 2007, at Portland International Raceway in Portland, Ore. http://www.subiefest.com

The carbon evo reportedly weighs in at 2700lbs. The Crawford STi at 3300 or so.

Where is everyone getting the "all carbon" notion from?? The AMS car is running body parts that are available to anyone who wants them. The hood, roof, and trunk are carbon yes but as far as we know, the only FULL carbon Evo belongs to HKS. I reeeeaaally want to see that Cobb monster run a TA event soon. I will be at that event. Its sure to be a blast. The best from Suby and Mitsu battling it out.

Oh yeah, straight from the staff over at AMS, the chassis needed a few more tweeks and the car could easily have shaved another .5 - 1 sec from that time. From what everyone is saying though, Much respect is due to the Crawford guys because that Sti was a phenominal machine and well tuned. Why can't we have events like this on the east coast.

The Crawford STi is a lightning fast contender, hats off to them!

And to clarify, our AMS TA1 EVO is not a full carbon fiber car. The doors, hood, roof and trunk are CF. The car weighs approximately 2750 lbs.

I believe the HKS Evo is around 2300 lbs so There is more weight savings available. The Cobb Sti will probably end up in that ballpark. As stated before, its going to be an interesting year.

Lets go off on a wild tangent for a second. Does anyone realize how close the Crawford Sti's and AMS Evo's times were to that race spec Porsche monster. Here are privateer shops one step away from conquering Pro race teams who are backed by big money sponsers. It is very amazing.
