You may have to pay sales tax in your state when you register your car. It works that way here in California.

They'll get you one way or another. Usually when you try to register the car in state they'll charge you for sales tax. But you might also have to jump through inspection hoops and pay fees.

I think it is dependant on where you register the car, not where you buy it.

FWIW, My family has done this quite a bit, Buying from my parents home state. And as best as I can remember, we only payed the sales tax for where we lived, basically where it was registered (i.e Missouri as opposed to Indiana) Although each state might be different in the way they ask for sales tax on cars, this way has been the case for us.

Not sure about other states but in WA it is supposedly illegal to not register your car in WA if you live here. It's supposed to be the location where the vehicles spends most of its time.

Because a little while ago new car tabs were based upon value of the car as set by the legislature, so a $35k vehicle could spend $700 a year for tabs. Tax evasion they call it or something. It's fraud anyway, unless you're in the military.

I bought my car in Utah, signed an out-of-state affidavit stating that I'm an Idaho resident, and payed Idaho sales tax.
