Default Anyone ever have a strut mount replaced? have estimate, want input

i snapped a bolt off of my driver's side strut top mount, having it replaced by the dealer . . . they want $370.

this price includes a front end alignment.

the part is $72 for ONE stock mount, that seems high since Group N mounts are $129 for a pair via Cobb.

my questions:

1. do you think the car would feel weird with Group N mounts only in the front?

2. is the alignment really needed? i've read of people doing changing these mounts on their own . . . it's beyond my capabilities (tools & space), that's why i'm getting it done. but no one ever mentioned an alignment to me the first time i posted in the suspension forum . . .

The problem is that the strut needs to be removed in order for the mount to be replaced, which could potentially screw up the alignment. I don't understand why the dealer can't just mark where it is now before it's removed, but I guess that's how the dealer makes money.
I bought some strut mounts for my Sundance once, and they couldn't have been more than $25 apiece for the stockers. $72 sounds like a lot for what it is.

Anytime you do any strut/shock/bearing etc you should always re-align the car. As far as them being able to mark where it is currently thats not really possible because with a new part not everything is going to go EXACTLY back where it was the new part will create some stiffness while everything else is broken in and soft. Plus, i dont know if you drove on it like that, but if you did it may have caused some stress in other areas of the car which coulda tweaked the alignment. Remember even hitting a curb at 2 MPH will screw your alignment very sensitive stuff in the front end. Alignment is recomended especially if you are only doing 1 if you did 2 it might even out okay.

As far as the price that sounds pretty high but what do you expect its from the dealer, they try and rip you off anyway they cancan.

1. I think it would upset the stability of the car to be unbalanced in this way. But who knows, the top mounts are only one part of the suspension equation.

2. Yes, get the alignment.

3. Do it yourself and save the $300

That's what I have had on my car for about 8 months. Feels just fine. Lots of people run different mounts on the front than the back (i.e. Cusco adjustable on the front & Group N on the back).

Obviously driving with your car out of alignment isn't the end of the world; millions of people do it every day. If you are short on money you can live without the alignment for a while, it won't cause you to automatically get into an accident the next time you drive the car. But you should get it done if the cost isn't going to keep you from paying rent or bills.

I did it on the side of the street in front of my house, got the spring compressor for free from AutoZone, and borrowed the socket set from a friend. It only takes about four different socket sizes. It's not beyond your capabilities

If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, find a friend or a fellow i-club member in your area who is willing to help. You'll save a few hundred in dealer "markup" and labor costs, and you'll have 2 new strut mounts instead of 1.
