Question Old idea for cheap exhaust.

Two weeks ago Iat a Wisconsin rally-x there was a guy witha silver WRX who removed the muffler and had a strait pipe welded on. Thing sounded sooo cool.

Anybody else do it? What do you think it would sound like in car at highway speeds, as I didn't have a chance to talk to him about it.

I was thinking of just having a strait 3" pipe custom bent with a flange to bolt up to the rear axle flange, with hangers. Its legal for autocross and when I go to the DMV I'll just bolt the stock one back on.

The only question I have is if will be overbearringly loud on the highway and while using the engine to slow down.

Anyone?

Well, it'll only cost a few bucks to try it yourself. Personally, I think your car deserves better than that.

Leave that for the guys with mustangs.

I met some guy that just took his muffler off; i have STI muffler so i can say that his car was about 5-decibels louder than my car and had a deeper sound but wasn't overbearing at all.(However you can get a ticket for it) -but unless you have other mods to your exhuast it shouldn't be too loud

I have a 2.5" straight pipe. Had it on practically since I had the car If you are a Subaru Rally Car fan, this is a must-have. Had it on my Legacy Turbo as well as my old RX Turbo Sedan. Simply the most "rally car" sounding exhaust ther is IMHO.

I don't consider it loud at all. Perfectly fine at highway speeds. I still have two cats on the car though so that muffles it ALOT. A 3" system with absolutely nothing might be a bit much, but would sound awesome nonetheless

FWIW, while many mufflers have their own distinct sound, I've found that the Dynomax Bullet mufflers do not create their own sound at all. Don't even really quite it all that much either, but if you have to have a muffler, for like $30, impossible to beat. 100 percent straight through.

My buddy is going with this muffler on his WRX with a full 2.5" system and the wastegate dumping to the atmosphere. Should sound wild at full boost !

Talking Oh, oh.....!

I have a walker dynomax "bullet style" muffer! Custom el-cheepo, one piece 2-1/2" cat-back - $230 total. All the muffler does is take the edge off.
When I'm ready for big power, I was going to get a custom mandrel bent 3" with another dynomax. Those suckers flow: straight through with just smooth, little tiny holes to the small outer fiberglass chamber. Oh, and they make up to a 5" straight through (!!!!!) muffler , for when you're ready for that twin turbo-v12 conversion!

Walker Dynomax

theres a ton of people that went this route...theres even a long thread about it and how much they spent.

it does sound good if the rest of your exhaust is stock

I have thought about having electric exhaust cut outs. Anybody ever see these?
With a down pipe, the cut out, then the stock exhaust. This would allow you to have a stock looking and sounding exhaust. Then you could flip a switch when needed and go to straight pipe.

link

Just a thought.....
