Angry Reminder: Do not purchase Maxtor drives.

Just a friendly reminder, stay away from Maxtor. I purchased a computer online about a year ago. It was a packaged deal where you just select the components you want. However, for the HD, it didn't let you select a brand just the type and size (I picked 250gb SATA). Before I fired up the machine I thought to myself, "Be anything but Maxtor". I turned it on and watched the POST. ****! Maxtor! So, within a month that one **** itself. I blame it on overheating because the guy who built the machine didn't give it enough fans. I had them RMA me a new one and I got a smoking deal on a Viper 2 case which has awesome ventilation and plenty of fan. On top of that, the front fan sits right in front of the drive bay. Win. At any rate, in less than a year with this drive being well cooled, it has now developed bad sectors. I'm currently running HDD regenerator on it (Hiren's Boot CD FTW!). We'll see if it recovers and remaps the bad blocks like it says it will. After that, I'll be purchasing something other than a Maxtor drive.

Anyone have any suggestions on who makes the best SATA drives these days?

I don't think bad sectors would be because of heat would it? More likely just a bad platter or bad drive itself.

No, the first drive that overheated the spindle seized. Not entirely though, which was nice because after I tapped on the case and got it to spin up I was able to copy the whole drive to the new drive that was RMA'd to me. This new drive, I dunno WTF is up with it. I think just manufacturer defect. Since I've had it, it has been handled with utmost care so it definitely wasn't caused by head crash. Oh, and the G sensor shows that it has never been tripped in the SMART data (error count is 0) so I know for a fact that it wasn't hit or anything like that to cause it. Grrrrr.

And to those who have never had problems with Maxtor, what is your secret? This is the 5th Maxtor that I've had problems with.

Seagate now owns maxtor and in the next couple months they will all have the seagate name and maxtor will cease to exist.

So yeah! DONT BUY MAXTOR!!!! Buy a Seagate!

Whatever happened to Conner HDs? Those things ROCKED!

We've had a batch of HP computers where all the HDs died. We're replaced 10 WD drives now, all from PCs ordered at the same time, so the only thing I can think is that it was a bad batch.. plain and simple. But we replaced them with Maxtor and Seagate and they've been good for us so far *knocks on wood*

This might actually turn out to be a good thing then. When Seagate acquired Conner, they took the best part from Conner drives (the electronics) and ditched the crappy part (the platters/motors) and used their own for those parts. This made their drives a lot more reliable.

See my post above. Although, I've only owned one Conner in my life and that is a 160MB (yes, MB) that I had for years on my Amiga 500. I still have it packed away in a box somewhere and as far as I know, amazingly, it still works fine.

Oh, and a funny bit of history about Seagate and Conner. Conner used to work for Seagate, then left to start Conner on his own. Later Seagate acquired his company back from him.

Hmmm, funny. I have had bad drives of all brands.
HD in my current is a maxtor, and going on 3 years with 0 problems.

I agree that Maxtor drives are garbage. We have a lot of computers at work, and every single dead hard drive I encounter is a Maxtor. I'll use any brand except Maxtor/Quantum.

EDIT: I made the mistake of buying a Maxtor for my sister, because it was cheap. It failed too.

At work, I have PERSONALLY seen around 10 Maxtor drives go bad, and maybe 1 Western Digital. We have around an equal mix of both.

My last two systems have had WD drives, but I have never had a problem even though everyone else says they suck. That's 7 years of spinning....

I've actually had quite a bit of luck with WD. Oh, and here's another brand that I'm glad is defunct now: Micropolis. What huge pieces of ****. Even their SCSI drives blew.

maxtor drive in my pc is still running strong with no problem at all .

1. never turn off my pc
2. maxtor hd hasn't run a defrag since early 2004
3. forgot what model it is but the main specs are 60 gig 7200 rpm plus it has a built in hd led on the circuit board under it ( extremely small one )

just got a 300 gig seagate from circuit city for a great price ( 100 bux ) brand new still sealed

These threads always go the same way:

Maxtors suck, I had 3 die!
Seagates suck too, I had 2 die in a week!
I replace Fujitsus all the time!
Western Digitals are the worst, I had one die last week!

So that leaves... Um... Flash memory. Great...

I remember those Quantum bigfoot drives that Compaq and others used to put in everything they had. Those things were such TOTAL ****, man. The only thing those things are good for is stopping 9mm bullets, which we found the platters can do well.

And while we're on the subject, are we all so quick to forget the IBM "Deathstar" from a few years ago?

I think I've made my decision on what I'm going to get for my replacement:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144417

That's $70 shipped, no mail in rebates to worry about and from a reputable seller. What do you guys think?
