Default New Zonda R: The ultimate Pagani?

New Zonda R: The ultimate Pagani?

http://blogs.motortrend.com/6203693/...ani/index.html

Quote:
Apparently 1.5 Gs of lateral grip and 602 horsepower just isn't enough to satisfy the most die-hard among the Pagani cliental anymore. Which is apparently why after selling out all 25 copies of its Zonda F coupe, Pagani has created the Zonda R.

Designed as a trackday tool, not a backroads toy, the Zonda R only shares 10 percent of its construction with the Zonda F. Gone are virtually any nods to comfort or luxury, substituted instead with integrated racing-style hydraulic jacks, a quick-fill, four pump racing fuel system, and a full roll cage. Would-be passengers need not worry however, there's still a seat for them too.

One of the most obvious modifications to the Zonda R is the large wing hanging off the rear of the car and the roof-mounted air intake. Indeed, the aerodynamics of the Zonda R have been optimized for track use, giving additional downforce in low-speed turns and complete adjustability for varying conditions. Underneath the new bodywork, the chassis is constructed from carbon fiber and the suspension geometry has been revised.

The heart of the Zonda R is based on the powerplant behind the all-conquering Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR DTM race car. The 6.0-liter V12 produces 750 horsepower at 8000 rpm and drives through a six-speed manual sequential gearbox. That's an even 100 horsepower more than even the Zonda F Clubsport.

It sounds to us like this is a race car with nowhere to race. Seeing as how the Zonda R is not homologated nor built to conform to the rules of any particular racing series, we think a factory race series similar to what Ferrari's FXX program would be a great idea. But then again, maybe not. After all, according to Pagani one of the first customer cars will be kept in a living room with a hi-fi stereo installed so the owner can strap himself into the racing seat and listen to recorded sounds of his car at the Nurburgring and Le Mans. That's not what we'd do with a Zonda R, but hey, we didn't plunk down $1.2 million for one either.

This is good news just to hear the sound it will make. If its anything like a Zonda F it will scream like nothing else.

Anyone else picture an 80+ year old short guy sitting in a car in his living room, wearing 1940s driving goggles, pretending to steer the wheel while making "vrooooom" noises?

2008 Pagani Zonda R Clubsport

2008 Pagani Zonda R - Compare

Quote:
Despite the fact that fewer than 100 cars have been built by Pagani since the Zonda C12 was introduced in 1999, its cars have been well known and dreamed about in the enthusiast community. Wild, race-bred looks wrapped around an interior second only to one crafted by God himself are the name of the game for the small Italian firm. It's a Ferrari Enzo except even more psychotic. That is, until last year when Ferrari debuted the FXX track car to be sold in low volume to hand-picked buyers for over $2,000,000. The Zonda R Clubsport is the answer to that car.

Power for the Zonda R comes from a 7.3-liter V-12 sourced from the AMG shop at Mercedes-Benz. Output is a dizzying 750 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque. And as with other Paganis, exhaust gasses are released through four pipes arranged in a square in the center of the car's rear. Between the body, the giant rear wing, and the countless spoilers and diffusers, there's enough carbon fiber on this car to slow up NASA space shuttle construction for months. And while it appears that those spoilers are responsible for 100 percent of the increase in overall length, the Zonda R's wheelbase is actually slightly longer than other models. Pagani hasn't announced a price for the R yet, but frankly, we don't even want to know. We just want a ride.

If you mean somewhat of a re-hash of the McLaren F1...maybe. But the MR/rear-engined supercar package innately demands such a shape. Why not just remix the O.G.?
