Liberal and progressive. Yeah, sounds about right. Just make sure she never gets any real positions of power...

It better never ****ing come into existence. I'm not paying to have stupid people **** on my car because your average driver is like my girlfriend's friend sucks (who should not even own a license... seriously who gets so anxious when driving that they think a guarded left hand turn lane from the OTHER DIRECTION is a left hand turn lane?). Tired of people thinking legislation to try and force people into this ideal citizen mold is a good thing.

You're aware of rearview mirrors, side mirrors, seatbelts, airbags, emergency brakes, crumple zones, and the other 34789789345 safety items that are mandated on your car already right?

Also, wow this thread is old.

Why are cars getting such bad gas mileage? We keep mandating they add weight, lets mandate higher fuel economy at the same time!

Yeah, I miss these days too:

While I see your point and everything is heavy these days, the rationale for a lot of the changes is hard to argue. My first car weighed 2065 lbs and the newest weighs 4594 lbs, but guess which one I'd rather have my wife driving... especially with the other monstrosities people drive (as if 4600 wasn't enough.)

I like the "It's loud in here so I'm going to shout louder" argument for buying a land behemoth.

All I see in that video is people doing what they loved to do. They knew the risks. I see no issues with it. I would not put black marks on their death by making examples of their lives to prove a point. They loved to race and dangers that came with it.

I salute them.

They could still drive incredibly unsafe cars in races if that was what racecar drivers wanted to drive. Things progressed on both fronts. It is as foolish to argue that people apparently did not like medical care in the past since they didn't have it.

These should only be required on vehicles that exceed a minimum viewing height out the rear of the vehicle. Every time this problem gets mentioned, it usually involves situation where people were driving large high vehicles and simply couldn't see out the back even if they were looking, combined with other irresponsible people who let the victim get behind the vehicle.

It takes two bad decisions to back into someone. One to drive the car without being able to see, and another person dumb enough to walk behind that vehicle, or lose track of a kid behind the vehicle backing up. This whole backup camera situation sounds like something being driven by lobbyist and insurance companies that are running out of ways to make vehicles safer.

If they really wanted to reduce accidents and fatalities, they should mandate blind spot threat notification and proximity radar on every car. Almost every accident I see on the highway is people switching lanes directly into another vehicle, or someone rear ending someone else (often because the person in front hit their brakes for ??? reason). Due to highway speeds, these can quickly result in fatalities. These would save a lot more lives every year than a backup camera would.

Oh and then they could quit being lenient on drunk drivers, who kill FAR more people a year (~18,000) than back up cameras would save. Any drunk driving conviction should result in mandatory long jail time, a 12+ month license suspension, and the DUI driver should be required to slap neon pink DUI Driver tags on their car for 10 years after that. Even if that only cut out half the fatalities, it would save 9,000 lives a year. Unfortunately there will likely never be a serious crackdown on drunk driving because a lot of people making the laws are the same people that like to "have a few drinks after work" and then drive home.

We have mandated higher fuel economy standards Cars today are getting better mileage than ever, don't compare old EPA numbers to EPA numbers calculated using the new standard (e.g. don't comapre the MPG numbers of a CRX and CRZ).

I'm all for mandatory backup cameras. The technology is now inexpensive enough, it will save lives, and the visibility of most cars (excepting Subaru) is awful. Have you ever sat in an FJ Cruiser?

This same thing is back in the news and some people are pushing for backup cameras in 2014 for all cars, that is why it got necro'd.

I think forcing cameras on cars wont really fixed anything.
The problem is people not paying attention to what they are doing.
a. the person driving, b. the person walking, c. the person watching over those kids

On the other side. Ive gotten on the driver's seat of some SUVs that had terrible rear visibility. Camera on those would be welcomed.

With modern tech, it would add, what, $50-$100 to the price of the car. If it saves lives and injuries...well worth it.

It cost more than that when you factor in repackaging and redesign costs, and those super cheap LCD screens are usually annoying and have a dreadful sheen to them when driving at night unless they turn completely OFF. Take a new Impreza that is in non-Limited trim, where would you put the screen on that? It needs to be big enough so that is it clear for people to see what is going on.

How much crap are we going to keep putting on cars because it may save 4 lives a year.

The base price of every single car will go up, thus hurting thousands of people who can barely afford a car anyway.

Why do all of you people who want these cameras hate poor people so much that you want to deny them a car they can afford?

the problem is people do not LOOK for anything behind them. Be that looking in the mirror or looking at a screen. THEY do not LOOK. You can put 10 more screens in the cars and if people do not look at them it is a waste and a knee jerk reaction to a minuscule and irrelevant statistic.

Err....

Car companies are already designing the interiors to accept optional nav/camera screens, even on entry level cars, it would cost less in packaging/redesign/tooling because they won't have to make it both ways anymore.

Oh shut up already! You're the one having a knee jerk reaction.
Whining about this because of your political ideology is pretty myopic, there is really very little downside to having mandatory rear view cameras and the cost isn't going to go up by much. Indocti Discant just proved you can have a RVC for less than $100.
Having driven a lot of cars with RVC's since this original discussion, it is a really convenient feature to have regardless of whether it saves lives

And perhaps "poor people" who can barely afford a car shouldn't be buying new cars, you know all that personal fiscal responsibility stuff right wingers like to go on about...

mopho, your consistency and name calling is boringly predictable.

IF people feel the need to add a camera let them be made optional. What is the brilliance of government going to do when people look down at their camera and they do not see the car coming down the parking lot and they get T-boned. Guess we need some side looking cameras now as well huh?

Technical gizmos are not substitute for an attentive driver.
