Default Third MAF crashes w/JC sports intake

I just had my third MAF crash while I was trying to pass a semi on an uphill stretch of I-70. It crapped out as I neared the halfway point of the truck with the throttle nailed in third gear. Scared the c..p out of me. Does Subaru know there is a problem with the MAF sensors on the '99 RS? In defence of the JC Sports people, they told me that if I went outside of the thirty day warranty on the new MAF sensor, they would help me get another one in warranty; I will test their constitution tomorrow.

It seems to me the only logical reason that Subaru changed was to keep people from screwing with the intake.

Is there any way to put a '98 maf in a '99 without having to do major rewiring?

I don't think there is a problem with the MY 99 MAF if used on a stock intake system. Many people have thousands of miles on their Imprezas with no problems. I've heard countless stories of it failing with a wide variety of aftermarket intakes. I don't think anyone has isolated the cause yet. I've read it could be vibration, increased air velocity, particles passing through the high flow filters damaging the wire element.....

So I guess you have to weigh the extra performance you get from the aftermarket intake to having the stock stable intake. Personally, I don't think I would fool with the MY99 air intake.

There are intakes that work with the 99 MAF sensor. There have been tons of threads in here warning of wich intakes work and which don't. Most of the intakes that seem to work retain the torque box (black box at the back of the engine) and securely mount the MAF sensor and protect it from excess vibration. I think Ganzflow is making one using a PRM inline filter now.
