Default What is KC going to do next auto-x season?

Some of you have been confused by recent comments and things said by be as to what I'm going to be doing for the '02 season.

Some of you couldn't care. (This thread's not for you)

As stated since the dawn of time, well ok, since the rumors of the STI or the EVO started, that if one of these cars comes over, they need to announce it by Jan 31st. If not, money will be spent on my car for a street mod buildup.

What will it be if it is a SM build? Vishnu stage 0, Big brakes, DMS or something comparable.

If they announce the STi or the EVO, then it will be a tough choice. It all comes down to specs and it needs to be under a certain price cap I've set.

But I've also been entertaining something else recently. What would happen if I skipped that and just got another car to turn into a dedicated racer if neither the STi nor the EVO will be here next year?

I've been thinking of getting another 2.5RS to compete in next years GS or STS. Also, I've been entertaining the thought of getting... an ITR. If ya can't beat em, join em. ITR's will still be going against the WRX's next year in DS and I just can't see WRX's ever beating them to take top spot at nationals.

I dunno, I have many decisions to make regarding this. I really like the idea of having a car I can race and don't have to count on as a daily driver.

So that's where I stand. Ideas? Suggestions?

STi won't be here next year. It'll be here in 2003. Not sure about the Evo, but I expect it around the same time.

I like the idea of having a second car as the primary racer. If you could pick up an RS for under $10K, I would do that. We all know that an RS is an awesome auto-x/rally-x car!!! Plus, you know you want a rally car!!

An ITR wouldn't be bad either. How much do those go for??? I would imagine an RS is cheaper, but I really have no idea. Also, how do those compare against an RS??

ITR is faster, lighter, and a bit more maneuverable than a stock RS, but many of them stay in GS whereas an RS can goto STS and STR quite easily and they have a significant advantage there.

The ITR and the RS are no longer going to be competing against each other unless they are both in SM.

STi isn't worth the alleged $10k difference.
$10k in mods would be better.

Evo is worth it.

My feeling is that an ITR will cost you a lot. I had to pay good $$$ for a GS-R a few years back, and considering the much lower number of ITR available, they won't be cheap.

With an RS, you can do rally-x with it too; with a ITR, you can do open track days. Your choice.

[It'd be pretty funny if you find the current owner of your RS and ask to buy it back! ]

I guess it depends what you want to do for racing long term Keith. There's pro's and cons to both situations.

If you were to strictly limit yourself to parking lot racing (hehe) then I suppose it wouldn't hurt to use your daily driver as long as you plan to remain in one of the "street" classes. However if you feel that you want to expand your driving interests, possibly try a hillclimb, maybe a rally or so, then I'd recomend getting a second vehicle. With that second vehicle comes a few other questions though. Do you need a tow rig? No? So it's going to be "street legal" then?? Insurance? etc...

My personal recomendation? If you're just going to auto-x, stick with one vehicle. (just be advised that you probably can't fit a second set of tires into an ITR) I'd like to see you compete in a Hillclimb, maybe One Lap, etc, etc... And for that I'd recomend a second vehicle. Maybe a gutted RS??

I don't care, as long as your not in my class.

Mod the WRX and really let the ass kicking begin.

If you're realling looking to go FWD, buy Billy's ITR.. already setup, never crashed, etc...

KC: I think you should NOT mod your WRX, and you SHOULD buy a dedicated track car. Build it up, and use it for track/autox. Keep your WRX 'stock', and when the STi comes around, either trade up, or sit on the WRX.

I was fully intending to buy an STi when it is available, but now it's less urgent for me to do that; I'm building a P-car for track use. My RS will be my street/autox-commuter-grocery-getter-ski trip-thingymabob.
Of course, when the time comes, I'll probably get the STi and use that as my street car, my RS for autox, and the P-car for track!!!
Food for thought.

KC,

I totally agree with your choice to get the WRX out of whatever class the ITR lands in... it really isn't competetive stock suspension vs. stock suspension. The idea of an RS in GS or STS is tempting, but awfully expensive in the long run for the cost of the car. (~10-11k for a 98 these days.) How about an Integra of some sort in STS? Is a N/A 2nd gen rx-7 legal in ST? (The rulebook is down for update at the moment...) Just throwing it out there. Food for thought as well would be the possible classification of the STi or Evo. I think there's plenty in AS or SS to keep them busy.

Fitz: Hmmm... I wonder how it'll do in SM. He used to kick butt when he auto-xed. Even in his 1st year rally trim on street tires, he kicked my RS butt with that car. But he's asking too much than I can afford. Cheapest ITR online right now is around $18K.

Tom: Yep. I want another car that I can work on, have it apart, yet still get to work the next day and not have to depend on it until the weekend.

Kurt: The RX-7 is a 2 seater sports car. (Some were 4 seats but it's still a sports car) Not allowed in ST. I can do an RS. I've seen a few online for the 10K price. That's not a problem. It also is a blast to drive. Heck, if it wasn't for my needing more power, I would still have mine. I love turbo power. It's addictive.

All these thoughts about another car entered my head at the rallyx after driving JG's car.

KC,

FYI, at Claire Acura (on Rt 1 in Norwood, MA), they have a '97 ITR, with aftermarket swaybars, intake, Mugen header + Mugen exhaust, a oil (or water) temp. gauge at the a-pillar, with some ~38k miles... they were asking 20k firm

if i have the money i would get it, but i don't

Well the wife approves of the 2.5 RS idea. But a few things have to get done 1st. (No prob, just a mortgage and her GMC Envoy)

So.... I'm kinda leaning to the 2nd car thing also. We'll see. Who knows... maybe I'll be in GS again this year...

I'm digging TTO's idea, get more cars, each of them having multiple roles, proportionally more fun to be had.

Now if you want a real monster, get one of these...

kC - read your post on the off-topic board about how cool your wifey is. Now, what you should do is buy an ITR or RS or whatever, turn it into a race car. Don't bother about registration/inspection/insurance because you can *tow* it with Liz' new Yukon! Ha! Of course she'll get to drive your WRX, but I am sure that'd be okay with you.

Whatever SUV we buy, it will have to be capable of towing a car. If it can tow a car, it can tow her horse trailer too.

You should go buy a Camaro SS before they are gone forever, and then go annoy the Porshces running S Stock.

(mutter, mutter, finally looking forward to 2002, no more WRXs in GS, and now KC's getting ideas again...)

Seriously, with the deluge of used RS's hitting the market, and the availablity of parts and whatnot, snagging one to use as a racer is not a bad idea.
