Default Need help with Progress Coilover

I just bought a set of progress coilover. This is my first time owning a set of coilover, I had no idea what to expect.

So I opened the package, and I was suprised to see every strut has only about 1 inch of rod exposing. It looked like all the struts are (almost) fully compressed. Does this look normal to you guys? What do I have to do to decompress them?

Also, the rear top hats which came with the coilover has rust on them. I am sure I can just call up progress to ask for a new set of top hats. But the problem is, if they rust in the package, i am sure they will rust more while on my car. Therefore, a new set is definately not gonna help. So i am just wondering if the rust look okay to you guys. Should I be worrying about it. Or those rust has no effect on the durabilities of the top hats.

I am trying to post some link to the photo albums, but the forum wouldn't let me do so. i guess you guys have to copy and paste the links then

Fix your links... use the image post button, or the insert hyperlink button. Or maybe your so new those functions don't work? Also, use the macro mode on your camera if your taking close ups, if your camera doesn't have a macro mode then take a picture the closest distance it actually focuses on the object your shooting.

That rust doesn't look so good, maybe a bad set? I would think it would have some sort of anti-rust coating or something. Also, did you order everything separate or what? When I buy coilovers I get a set of coilovers all set and ready to go with everything assembled just needs to be put on the car.

Everything came in one big box. It labels "progress" out side the box. So i would assume its straight from progress.

In side the box, there are 4 small boxes. 1st one has the struts. 2nd one has the springs. 3rd one has the top hats. 4th one has the bump stop, wrench, nuts and bolts and seats for the springs.

Wow. I'm sorry.

Definitely get those camber plates replaced, and put a rust proof coat of paint or something on them maybe?

I swear imagestation never works right. Oh well. Is that how they came pacakged??? They look horrible. Can you pull up on the struts at all? Are they new?

Oh, that wasn't they way they are packaged. Those struts are supposed to be nicely packed in a smaller box. i took them out for picture taking.

I didn't try to pull them out with my hands because i dont know how they are going to come out. I dont want the rods to come out in whatever hundred lb of force and poke a hole in my chest.

Hmmm...it is a bit shady that they showed up with a little rust on them, but there isn't any way for the vendor or manufacturer to see them once they are boxed up. It just looks like a little surface rust to me and that isn't going to cause any problems. Clean it up with a wire brush and paint over the top of it to keep rust from coming back. I wouldn't worry about small things like that.

If you have questions about the dampers and the piston rods, that would be a question to ask the manufacturer. I suggest calling them on the phone since they've never returned an email that I've sent.

Here's the interesting thing I noticed when looking at the pics again. The struts at rest are not sticking out of the housings equally. Very strange and "most" struts want to naturally return to full stroke at rest. I have seen dead struts before that do not rise back out of the housings and look very similar.

Man... i am so confused. I messaged the seller, and there was no reply. I called up progress. The guy who spoke to me said that the struts are supposed to be compressed so that they can fit into the box. All I have to do is to pull out the rods.

So I tried to pull the rod out, and it worked. The rod was able to come all the way out. Then i tried to push it back it. To my suprise, i was able to push it all the way til its fully compressed. And guess what, it did not come out on its own, and i had pull it back out.

I am going to call up progress again. I want to know how they are going to explain this......
