5th gear whine

I have a 5th gear deceleration noise that occurs in 5th only. It is really noticable when I come up to a set of traffic lights coming to a stop form 60mph to about 30 mph before I change down. The noise also occurs between 60 to 75 mph at part throttle or no throttle.It is a gear "whine" that is either 5th gear or the bearings on the shaft that has 5th gear. I have no other noises that are like the other deceleration posts. The rest of my gearbox is perfect. Still breaking it in at 3000 miles

Subaru is pulling the box next week.

Cars still stock till I have this warranty issue behind me.

Anyone had this problem yet?????

My Subaru dealer here in Calgary is terrific but it may be because I was born in 54.

Which dealer did you take your wrex too? I tried Centuar and they told me that the gear whine I was hearing under deceleration (in my case it is with 1st gear) was the turbo. Don't think I will be going back there. I subsequently took the car to C.English and they said that there was nothing wrong with the car after charging me $50 to change the tranny fluid. Previous to that I went for a test drive with one of their techs who thought there was a problem. I'm a little pissed off now as they are the only two subie dealers here in Calgary.

So did your problem end up getting fixed? It sounds like we have the same problem just a different gear. I would love to know what the problem ended up being.

He posted as recently as Sept 2004 (just click on the user name and select search for other posts...), but you'll probably have more luck PMing or emailing him, as I doubt he's cruising the warranty forum checking for updates on his post.
