Default New here, and new problems.

Well this has been an interesting day with a tow and some other things. Anyway this is my dads 97 Subaru Impreza outback 2.2L, bone stock and automatic... and i love the car to death. well he recently went away on business and i was driving it around like normal. I don't beat on the car at all because gas is to expensive for me but i recently have gotten what i think is a big problem. Well today i was leaving my friends house after hanging out with his sister and such, so i go out and start the car. it roars to life, but as i try to go in reverse it feels really stiff in the shifter. i think nothing of it as it was cold and i thought i was just weak from.. well yeah.
ANYWAY i reverse out of the parking space, and then attempt to put it into Drive. it is REALLY stiff and i barely make it. but its in there. so i drive up to a gas station to get gas and then stick the car into park, but it will not go into park. it goes into reverse so then i neutral it. I turn off the car, but then i cannot turn it on. the transmission is basically in a mode where its can't be started because of the safety switch. So i try to move it into some sort of position and it will not start. So i have to tow it. and here i am. does it sound like my transmission is toast? I do not know my way around automatic transmissions for **** (i daily a 87 supra 5 speed) so what can i look for? is there any walk through.
Sorry for the lengthy post but i am in dire need of help. Thanks in advance.

It cant be the tranny, Subaru auto trannys are bombproof I also own a 2001 forester AT, it has almost 170 000m on it and the tranny is A1.

Not having enough fluid or dirty fluid can cause these conditions without warnings, or perhaps there were signs you may have shrugged them off as something else.

yeah, among other things the car used to stall out randomly due to the Crank Positioning sensor. Well time to check some major things. what grade ATF to use? i have some dextron ATF fluid that i used for power steering so im hoping its good.

well i checked my codes and im throwing a P0130. i searched and it brought up a O2 sensor malfunction. What i do not get is how on earth that wouldn't allow the car to start. Is my car screwy electrically wise? I also was working on it today and i popped off the center console, and i noticed a red wire that is cut. i do not know what this wire is but it goes to this little weird what looks to be a sensor of some sort. What gauge wire do i need for this? my wires are far too short to reach each other....
edit. my key also will not go into the lock position. perhaps it is thinking the car is still in some sort of gear and cannot be started.
