Default Cluster swap

Hey guys,

I know, I know another cluster swap thread. But, I cant find any good info for a non-STi swap...please be gentle.

I will be swapping a 2005 WRX instrument cluster into my 02 WRX very soon (maybe today) and need a little clarification.

I have read tons of threads, all talking about STi cluster swaps. If I ever do swap for an STi one, I think I got that down?

I know that the ABS light will probably stay on (working on a circuit to fix that though), but, is there anything else that I have to do to make the swap work?

Thanks in advance.

The guys at my local performance shop said it should bolt right in with no problem. Plug and Play.

I dout they are the same. . . but not 100% sure . . . They probably have changed just like the 05 STi and up. The change is not much but one plug wont fit. Its not too hard to fix though

Thanks for the replies.

I heard that about the 1 plug that needs to be "shaved". Dont know if thats an STi specific thing though.

I just put an '05 cluster in my -02. It is plug n play, no shaving, no problems. You will have the ABS light on, but you can just tape the back. My cruise light doesn't work, but I think it's a unique case, meaning not the swap, something else going on (the cc still works though.)

The ABS light will be on because they've reversed the polarity (light off when signal, light on when no signal - opposite of earlier models.) I've contacted a couple of electrical places but no one has an answer about how to fix this (cheaply.) -though I'm sure it could be done. Let us know if you find a circuit to fix it.

You need to do stage gels and Mechie3's LED swap, then you'll be coool.

yea i kno that the sti cluster from 04 to 05 they made slight changes, so it is most likely there are differences between each year

Thanks azscooby!

I'm assuming that the 02-04 ABS circuit has voltage present during normal operation. When it faults, voltage is removed and the light lights.
But, On the 05 +, there is no voltage present during normal operation and it applies voltage when faulted. Or is it reversed? Need to pull out my scope and check it out.

Its just in the "thinking" phase right now, but there must be a relay in the ABS circuit that is either NO or NC. Maybe just put an opposite relay inplace if the existing one? Or add another relay based on the normal condition of the circuit.

It will take some time (low priority), but I hope to get it figured out.

I think it's the opposite, but test to make sure, as I haven't checked it myself.

I know there's got to be something that can do this, is a simple engineering process, I'm just not an engineer. Seems like all you would need is a seperate device/relay to reverse the signal.

I called a few places, but the guys didn't know what I was talking about - but they didn't sound all that bright either.

Let us know what your progress is.

Right on. Got the cluster and in plugged right in. (no triming, no cussing, no nothing)

I will update the masses when (if) I find a fix for the ABS.

Thanks all.

I realize im waking the dead here but if I can get an answer in this thread it would be useful to someone else in the future.

My bro just bought an 02 WRX Wagon. He would like to have the tach in the center of the gauge cluster as well. I see that in the 05 wrx a cluster swap is doable but the ABS light will be ON, if he swapped in a 04 WRX cluster that had the tach in the center, would the ABS light be on just like the 05?
