I have recently changed my sleeping habits due to job change and was wondering what the consequences are going to be/not be.
I used to be completely useless unless I got at least 9 hours of sleep Now I average about 5 to 6 (1 hour naps included) and am pretty active. I work 40 hour weeks, go to school full time, box in the amateurs, go to gym and party. Questions: How much sleep is optimal 9+ hours of sleep is bad or good? Can I catch up on sleep? (ie: average 6 hours of sleep most of the week and sleep 14 hours once a week) Whats optimal for an active person? What are side effects of sleep shortages? etc, etc, etc. Any links to legit articles about sleep studies would be help

Differs from person to person but the minimum is 7 with most health experts recommending 8.

Yeah between 7-8.. depends on how active you are.. The more active you are the more you should get...

you can't catch up...sort of. You can't sleep like 14 hours and then not sleep for 3 days. That doesn't work.

The only way for me to feel fresh and able to go with out caffiene is to get 9 hours of sleep. I don't care what any of those fools say. I take alot of naps too, it feels like it resets my brain.
Affects of sleep shortages, if you're a very active person (like me) will cause your body to break down/not heal quick. |

Oh man. Now to just figure out how to balance everything out so I can have my cake and eat it too. I cant work any less for financial reasons. I cant drop out of school becuase well I am already behind. I have no desire to quit boxing/muay thai because I love it and I need a social life because well I am young and I dont want to look back and have regrets. |

What's more important..not getting enough sleep and suffering the consequences by 40 or adjusting to make your health a priority and being healthy (and happy).

you'll be fine getting 6 hours a night and a little more on the weekends...
hell, this is my weekend this past weekend: Friday night, get 9 hours, get up at 8am. Get to work at 4pm, work until 5:30 AM, go home, get to bed at 6:30 Sleep until noon (5.5 hours), back to work at 4pm. Work until 3am Get home, go to sleep by 4:30am, get up at 8:30am (4 hours), go to court. Get home from court, hoping for a nap...no such luck. Go to work 4pm, work until 3am again. By this time I'm BEAT. I've also not had caffeine since 5pm. I had no problems falling asleep that night!! |

4-6 hours for 2.5 years straight is probably not good.
Ask me about my last 2.5 years |

yeah I can tell you now that 6 hours + work stress + physical activity doesn't work too good for the body.

the method 6 hours or less during the week and 14hrs the week end doesn't really work efficiently.
I've been doing that for the past month and I can feel the difference. I usually also need 9hr/night. At the moment, I am much more irritable, I have difficulties to concentrate on something for a long time, I'm getting a bad cold and I drink ton of tea everyday to be able to stay awake during meetings..But yeah i see you point in willing to keep active and social..I'm still hoping that my body will get use to it. I find time to get sleep eveywhere. On the way to the bar if someone is driving, on the way to the club, in between classes, pre boxing naps are money |

How do YOU feel?
I know I'm getting enough sleep when: - I wake up BEFORE my alarm clock goes off, or on the first beep - I am not constantly seeking sweets during the day If you are pushing yourself out of bed, drinking a pot of coffee, drinking caffeinated soda and then still feeling tired you aren't getting enough sleep. Generally, you can't "make up" sleep by going longer on the weekend -- get that sleep during the week consistently and you will do better. |

Well here is the strange part: BEFORE i used to not be able to fall asleep until 2 am every night when I got 9 hours of sleep and would still struggle to get up (fighting with the alarm and such) NOW I get 6 hours if I am lucky and I sleep like I am dead and get up the moment the alarm rings ( I am not happy about it but I do it) I can't exactly figure out whether its becuase I will lose my job if I am late or what...but I kind of like it |

Taking note of your heart rate before you sleep and when you wake up should help you gauge things... read it somewhere but too lazy to link it.

weird...I sleep MUCH LESS when I am active - like working out or swimming, etc...
Just started working out again for the past 3 weeks and before that it had been maybe 6 months of being lazy...and I slept wayyy too much |

I think its whatever feels good to you. If I get more then 6 hours I am dead all day less than 4 I tend to drag as well.
