Default Legacy GT 1-4 gears vs PPG 1,2

does 3 and 4 really take that much torque?

would just upgrading 1 and 2 be enough?

my question is, does 3 & 4 really take that much stress compared to 1st and 2nd?

The closer you get to 1:1 ratio, the less stress. That being said...will a 30r blow LGT 3/4.....that's a toughy.... I'd say call Andrewtech Automotive and listen to them.

I have a GT52 on water injection which will put out similar torque numbers as your GT30R. I'm still currently on my stock WRX box, and believe it or not, it's holding up.

The clutch you pick out and how you drive will make a big difference. From what I've heard, the Legacy GT gears are mostly beefier than WRX gears on gears 1-2, not 3-5 (for the newer 2004+ models).

IMO, here's a setup that I think would hold fine if you don't drive too crazy.

PPG 1-2, Legacy GT 3-5 all on a 4.11 FD.

This is basically like a true Legacy GT gearbox in terms of ratios and final drive with a super beefy 1-2. PDX is running a rotated setup on their Legacy GT on the stock 5-speed and it's still holding up fine. The shorter final drive helps reduce the stress on all the gears, but 1-2 still take the majority of the abuse. With a PPG 1-2, this is a setup I think would hold almost any setup.

That being said, I'm no specialist. This is just an opinion based on all the facts and data I could come up with.

they eventually will go, the more stress that the tranny experiences the sooner it will go. 1 of my 4 transmissions went when i wasnt even beating on the car. Usually i drive my car spiritedly the day i didnt is when it broke...... go figure.

yea...its a total gamble...

ultimatly I know I will require the full PPG dogbox with upgraded diffs and axles.

But untill then I just want something to hold me over, that won't break right away from "mild" spirited driving.

lets just hope that (once I am running 500whp) that I can hold back.... & actualy take it easy on her....

Default legacy gt gearset

I had Andrewtech Technology out of Maryland rebuild my smashed 02 wrx tranny with Legacy GT gears. All I have to say is WOW!!! Car pulls so much harder all the way to redline compared to the stocker. Im running vf34 turbo and obviously everything else with cobb accessport and pro-tune. Gears are nice and close so boost is constant and it is sooo smooth. Andretech did a great job!

gears=early model 1-2 lgt
gears=late model 3-5 lgt

Actually, it's not weird. Typically your spirited driving my slightly crack the teeth, but not necessarily shred them off.

Then one day while driving normal with a little acceleration...BOOM! It's not an uncommon story. You're driving did pay a large role in your trans.
