Default Importing a car (how to ensure it isn't a lemon)

I hope I don't get bombarded with every witty "search" picture out there. I've tried searching the VIC boards and the Canadian forums but everything came up as the technical procedures in going about bring a car over. Which forms, when to do what... that I have a good understanding of.

Where my question fits is this. I'm looking for advice as to how I can decrease my chances or purchasing a lemon or at least, suggestions for finding a better car over another. Locally my procedures would be to see the car in person, test drive it, carfax, icbc check, and bcaa check. A car that I'm looking for is in Utah so this limits the ease of doing some of the aforesaid things. Carfax isn't a problem. If it gets serious enough, I can fly down to do a test drive and personal inspection. However, I'm not mechanically inclined enough to inspect a car's mechanics. How would you suggest I go about having something equivalent to the BCAA check done? Or do they have a service in the states similar to BCAA's 143 point inspection? Thanks.

To be honest with you it's really hard to tell if it's a lemon just by checking it out. You really have to see the service records and see what's been done in the past and if the stuff that's been done in the past would be indicative of more future problems (ie a lemon). The good news though is.. because it's used and it's in the states.. they have lemon laws and chances are, the current owner, had he or she received a lemon, would most likely have gone through the procedure to get a new car. Having said that, you should be able to find a local shop or dealership to check the car out or check out AAA (the american equivalent of the CAA) and see if they offer similar services.

Make sure you get an inspection, end of story. My car came from WA and I went down to look at it and get it inspected. Utah is far, but maybe you can ask/pay someone to do it for you over the forums here.

I'd be flying somewhere in the states, not japan.

Yah I figured perhaps having the person take the car to a reputable shop and getting it inspected for a fee. Then i guess calling up the shop to get some feedback or maybe looking for a member in the Utah area.
