Default Putting together my own HID kit

i was/am thinking about upgrading to hid's. there are many different kinds out there as everyone knows, and many different prices. does anyone know if it is possible (and a good idea/worth the money) to buy a cheap ebay kit and then buy good phillips bulbs and replace the crappy ebay bulbs. will this work? is there a better way to do it? is it worth the time?

no point in putting together a kit thats going to fit into the 05 wrx, you are better off just upgrading the bulbs or get some oem sti lamps.
