i would check the fluid. and expect the noise to be coming from struts or strut mounts. if its under warranty take it to the dealer and let them worry about it.

Hay, what about if you take it to the dealer for a 30k check up from the neck up and you still have that noise. I was told from my dealer that he had to check some of the bulletin from Subaru. Car was pick up on Tuesday still have not heard from the dealer yet . I will still do some searching.

i actually heard that the 0405 stis are notorious for this rear popping sound from the rear. when i swapped my 04 tranny in, i heard it for a while. unless you heard grinding, you should be ok.

There's a lot of noises coming from the back of an STi....and not the good kind either.

Dull clunks and thunks are normal coming from the rear diff when shifting in and out of 1st and reverse.

If you hear a popping noise or loud clunking, check the center and rear diff fluid levels, and make sure all your tires are properly inflated. A rear tire with a 2-3psi difference in pressure from the other will make a lot of noise in the drivetrain.

Lift up on the rear fender and slowly push the body back down. If you hear clicking or popping, the struts are the culprit....there's like a 75 page thread about it in the Suspension forum.

If it's a rattle, take everything out of the trunk, including the spare and trunk floor. Don't forget the jack on the left side. Also, it's easy for small parts of junk to fall down into this little cavity under the carpet on the left side behind the drivers rear wheel fender. I had a bungee cord fall in there for a couple weeks and it drove me crazy trying to find it.
