sorry, I didn't see your reply prior to posting buster. I"ll check it out soon. If i pull off the balljoints for inspection, is an alignment necessary?

Depends on what you are inspecting, but yes, you will be unbolting the struts. I pulled down on my control arm and there was 5 mm of play, mine was screwed.

Only noticing it at low speed, right? Any chance it's stiction in the strut?

I don't know if you really can. I get it a bit in my rears (STi struts - apparently it's a known issue). Sounds like clunking at slow speeds in parking lots for example. A bit of silicon spray on the stanchions to lube the seals diminishes it for a time. Not a permanent fix. Annoying more than anything.

i know. my car is developing more and more noise. It's driving me nuts. I have this weird whine when i first start up the car. So if the car has been sitting there and fully cool, fire 'er up, you hear a subtle eeeeeeeeee. But get this, once you tap the accelerator, it goes away until the next cold start...
