I'm surprised this hasn't seen to much enthusiasm yet, I read about it on the IWOC mailing list and ran over to i-club right away to see if you guys knew yet.

Well guys, this is AWESOME news! I'm so excited, what a brilliant move on Subaru's part to have Prodrive completely redesign the new style! We should expect a new bumper (which I'm excited to learn more about), a better hood (bigger scoop), most importantly new headlights (not round and bulgy anymore), possibly a whole new rear/trunk too!

I can't wait til this thing makes it over here, which, as JGard pointed out, won't be until '04. Sorry for the guys ready to buy the Sti, it will be in the same body style as the WRXs. But in a couple years, woo hoo, brand new Impreza style, same great internals. Bring on the pics!!

Oh, and for the guys who are getting excited about having a limited run of the current style: You already have more than the entire first gen Imprezas, and with the STi coming out, especially since Subaru is the WRC, you can expect everyone will know about and have your car.

To me, this is a sign that Subaru has learned from its design mistake, and is reverting back (or springing forward) to something new! So to all the new-schoolers, you'll just be the ugly black sheep in the glorious WRX family!

I think you might be jumping the gun a little bit, since nobody has designed anything yet and it's going to be a long time before we actually see anything. Keep in mind prodrive did design the UK300 headlights and wing, which have had their fair share of criticism... I wouldn't equate new-age with new-school, I've owned an Impreza since '98... I don't think the new design is going to be radically different from the current design, but we'll just have to wait and see. I certainly won't mind having my WRX if and when they do come out with a new style .

That whole thing just doesn't make sense. Subaru is going to have prodrive redesign the body of the new wrx, and than release it in 03 in japan. Will they than still redesign the body in 05.06?? and All this specualtion comes off a website and all from "Tokyo sources". I'll believe it when Someone from subaru OR prodrive says that. And about the black sheep comment. That is your opinion I like the car. And alot of other people do also.

Who is WardsAuto.com? Have they ever correctly predicted anything? Seriously, I don't know who they are, or why I would believe them.

If this is true, HEY PRODRIVE...look at any of the other concepts that were floated out there. ANY of them would have been better.

How can I post a pic of my favorite?

personally, i really didn't like the design of the MY02 impreza, then, it started growing on me... now i look at my GC8 and think ****, i really want a new age impreza... it looks unique, and i don't know about the rest of you, but being unique is pretty cool... otherwise, we would be at clubsi.com.... now who really wants that?... i like the the round headlights, cuz i've seen alot of sweet mods... and it just looks awesome... just a thought

I'm not sure why some people are surprised. If you buy the first model year of any car, it's going to be outdated the fastest. That's true of almost every car that's ever been made. It's the price you pay for having it first, which is also a cool thing. But if you want the most refined and least "buggy" version of a car, you don't buy the first model year, simple as that.

wait a minute. you don't think the GC8 is unique, esp. in this country before the WRX came out, almost no one knew what my car was. now that subaru is actually marketing the WRX everyone thinks mine is one of those. regardless, billy bob f-body knows what a WRX is, whereas nobody except rally enthusists (same as nobody in this country ) and a few diehards knew what the RS was in the GC8. i personally think that the v.6/22b were some of the best looking cars ever made. when i first saw the pics of the GDA, i was less than impressed. seeing it in person, i appreciated it more and know pretty much all that bothers me is those damn eliptical headlights, esp. right above big round foglights. the new grill was a huge help, as well. other than the front, the car still screams impreza. GO PRODRIVE!!!

The only problem with the headlights is the eye brows that we get.

The WRX, at less than 20,000 units represents only a small portion of the compact car segment at Subaru. They're competing on a heckuva lot more than the WRX- they're going head to head w/ Civics, Proteges etc... in their regular Impreza line. So if those sales are lagging, this is going to really hurt them, regardless of how well the WRX does. Besides the WRX's value proposition is heavily weighted towards performance. That makes up for looks in some ways, but doesn't appeal to mass market cars. I'm guessing its the hundreds of thousands of regular Imprezas that they're not selling which is worrying them.

oh and WardsAuto is pretty well regarded in the industry. Their top 10 list is like religion. Ward's top 10 engines is always a BIG deal. kinda like J.D. Power's rankings.

It's kind of cool how in that Dutch picture the headlights echo the shape of the taillights. I wonder if they'll be able to pull this redesign off without redoing the fenders, hood, and grille filler panel. I don;t really see how they can, which is too bad. If they did it solely through the use of "filler" type panels then you could choose which version you liked better, old or new, and do it that way thorugh the use of new or junkyard parts.

From Prodrive to your Harddrive... Let the rumors continue!
The New-new WRX could be a thing of beauty!

Actually, I'm surprised that no one here has yet to claim that the current Impreza's ugliness was due to GM's 25% stake in FHI.

And as for Wards AutoWorld, it is highly regarded as an insider mag. Check it out here.

First thing:

Let's stick to the topic and not insult, ridicule and/or disrespect our current WRX owners. Act your age and not your shoe size...

Second thing:

I believe that whoever takes responsibility to redesign the front of the vehicle has to work with the moldings of the surrounding areas if they are going to keep it aligned with the car. Unless they redesign the hood, which in addition, are changing to a bigger scoop anyway...so maybe it will or won't. They might consider the fact that present '02 owners would feel "ripped-off" or inconsidered for bringing in profit to Subaru; so they can upgrade the 'facelift' to '03 if they feel the car looks better.

The market can go either way...but being it's Prodrive, I think they'll work with the current moldings and just design a better selling vehicle.

Damn, that car is F*cking sweet. I think if Subaru does change the body style to that, they might be able to sell a few more WRX's or RS's.
Everyone in my family, except for me thinks that the Bug eye headlights make the car ugly. Subaru should have stayed more conservative, like Honda does.

Was'nt these pics posted when we were speculating about the 2002 WRX?

And don't you think that people would look at your car and say:

- Cool car...is that the new Eagle Talon? (BTW..I like them)
-Awsome...Mazda has spiced up there line-up!!!

Would'nt you guys be insulted??

At least with our Bug-Eyes they know it's a Impreza!!!

If they do change the look completly....I'll have a collector's item....Ugly or Not!!!!

Why i think they will wait for 04 at least.

IF they do retool the car how many of the current body will they be able to sell when the supposed "NEW" style will be around the corner?

If they do that, at least in this country the wrx will get killed. Because you can bet that mitsu would take full advantage of this and take every bit of this market subaru opened up.

Honestly I could care less. As I said I'm still going to order my wrx in april, and hope I still get it in june.

I bet that all wrx's for 03 will have the bigger scoop, and maybe the projector lights to try and make people happy. With those two things and the new grill I think the car looks mean.

Yea, those pictures were old artists renderings of what the new Impreza(the current bug eyed one) would look like before we had any real pictures.

Here's the current artists rendering on what the restyle will look like. Now considering how far off those old renderings are of the current car, I wouldn't put much faith in the restyle looking like this. Also, the news report said smaller, more agressive headlights. These are a little more agressive, but actually look bigger than the current ones.

That's a nice concept above, I like it. But Prodrive said the current head lights are oversized, so I doubt they would make it any bigger.

Judging from Impreza WRC 97, 99, 2000, I have faith in Prodrive that the facelift (if the rumor is true) will be great.

wow, those images from the Dutch board are beautiful. I wouldn't think twice about buying one if it looked like that. It does, however, look a LOT like the Legacy from the front.

As long as it didn't look like that red car with the 10,000,000 non-functional gauges on the dash and crap all over the outside (you know which one I'm talking about), I dont care what the WRX looks like.
I think most wagon owners will agree.

if you give me a blue one like the one that Eby posted, I know what is going to be in my driveway. I like it better than the other concept drawings, although, they're not bad either. Has anybody heard a timeframe for this change to make it over here? I can only wait about a year, it's killing me!!!!!!!!

Well, when they brought the WRX, the GC8's value dropped significantly. If they bring another, who knows? It could rocket or drop like a rock. Only time will tell....
