Default keylight ring in 02 or older impreza

For those that never got one of these I ordered one up and wired it in with the dome light.

Result: keyring light that illuminates with overhead dome light, fading 2 seconds after door is closed.

Part number for keylight: 84661FC010

First, remove the lower dash on the driver's side and the steering column cover.

Lower dash (kick panel): 2 screws and pull.

Steering column: one screw underneath, remove speedometer cluster surround with two upper screws, two screws hold top column cover and then gently pull this off.

Non-illuminated keyring: held on with little teeth on either side of the key column. Remove and throw away or use as a **** ring for those economically minded ??? :P

Wiring:

The light just needs +12V and a ground to be illuminated. Problem is that the interior light circuit is reverse grounded. Meaning it gets power only when the light is out.

So....

1. Wire one side to a continuous +12V. I choose the Blue with red wire that goes into the top of the fuse box within a 12 pin connector. (In pic below 2nd connector from top on the far left)

2. The other side needs the interior light ciruit. This is located in the integrated unit almost directly under the speedo cluster and has two connectors with 20 and 16 wires (B281). Within the one on the right (16 wire one) that is blue, you want the blue wire (pic below). This is on the bottom row and on the right side of middle.

Wire this up to the other wire on the keyring. I just cut off the keyring connector and extended the wires and then used taps to connect to the harness.

Cliff notes: So 2 wires from keylight. One goes to continuous +12V source, other goes to dome light (blue connector under dash, blue wire).

Put back together in reverse order and voila! Hope that helps anyone who wanted to get this

Glad someone else tried this. But it seems mine (g/f's car) has stopped working recently. I am going to have a looks at it soon...

I am thinking it may need a diode somewhere to keep the current from going beyond the light.

Bring it back from the death, but I want to know if you ever figure out what's wrong with it?

any online dealer can hook you up (www.subarugenuineparts.com, www.subaruparts.com, www.subaruwrxparts.com, etc.) - alternatively, go to the for-sale forum and watch for anything 03 or later and try to pick one up that way (with any luck, they'll give you the part of the vehicle harness as well, so you can keep the install a bit neater - that's what I did to get mine)

jamie can definitely get one for you. sometimes SGP can be hard to find stuff on because it's based off of/uses the subaru parts database... but it's definitely something jamie can get for you.

you can try sgp, but i was told it's part of the ignition system and they don't sell it.

try renick motorsports, they have them listed on their site

ah thanks alot, I'm trying to see how much the local dealership has them for, since wrecked subies are pretty rare in my area...so it'd be hard to find a used one...

Do you have aftermarket alarm? If so, you can't follow the instruction because mostly ppl will have some sort of relay tap into that wire sometime and it will give you both 12V instead of ground and 12V when door is open. Mine was like that, then I directly tap it off the dome light wire which will give me power when doors are open, then tap another one off the continous 12V and it worked that way, basicly it is the same thing as above, just find another signal off the dome. If you pop your right side A-pillar, you should see the same color wire off the dome light as long as it is the one that will give you 12v when doors are open. It should be the blue last time I looked On Demand service program. Try that.

Have a Nice Day?

^thanks for the help, i will try that later on today/tonight

continuous power from blue plug>red cable = check, that works, and this is what i did with the blue plug inder the speedometer last night:
- blue cable: works when plug is unplugged, stopped working when plugged in
- blue/red cable: works all the time
- black cable doesn't work

so i woke up earlier this morning and tried these:
- both blue cables: doesn't work when door is open, works when door is closed but causes buzzing sound *i understand that it is reverse ground, but i don't know how to make it such

i don't know if this confuses people more or what, or maybe it will give someone insight into my problem, but right now one of my harnesses is all chewed up

but on the plus side is that there are no fitment issues with the cowlings, it actually looks like it's supposed to be there so we'll see.....

Unhappy

so this is really killing me right now, went into the passenger a pillar, near the middle of the pillar i saw three wires: blue, blue-red, black; blue makes the keylight do opposite of the dome light, blue-red is on all the time, black does nothing, so i just have to figure out how to "reverse" the activity on the blue wire, any suggestions? or maybe i should look futher down the pillar like near the dash? thanks in advance!

What I did is test out which wire will give me the 12v when door is open, then I find any ground to tap into for the other wire on the keyring. It should light up the keyring when your door opens and dim out, then off when door is close just like the dome light. Think about how the dome light lights up with, then you will know.

Cool

so i'm dumb.....there's 3 wires going up the pillar, one side to the blue (ground) and one side to blue-red (continuous power), bam, easy, just had to run it through the rest of the dash which was no big deal compared to all the bs i went through with everything above, so.....
