It depends on the year. For a '97 Legacy, you're probably looking at a standalone (such as the Hydra.. available from Boxer4Racing) as your only option.

ISpeed will only reflash ECUs from 99+, RalliTEK's PP6 only works with 98+ ECUs and Cobb refuses to spend time on developing an AccessPort for any of the pre '05 NA vehicles.

The Boxer4Racing web page says their Hydra EMS Nemesis works on 98 and newer. I'd love some engine management for my built 97 wagon to take advantage of my 11:1 compression ratio. I've got thousands in my motor and can't "tune" it.

98 and newer makes no sense because a 98 was still a BD in my case so why wouldnt it work on mine?

im in the same boat man....high compression ej25 and now i need to tune it since i spent money rebuilding the block and buying the cams, etc, etc. im leaning towards wideband O2 sensor and gauge, EGT sensor and gauge, and apexi safc-2.

I am unsure of the BD series but the BH/BE and the 00-04 Impreza basically have the sameengine but different ECMs. Openecu.com has the software to tune the Impreza's ECM but haven't broke the codes for the BH/BE. No one is really trying anymore, bigger better things to do.

I have not gotten into it enough to see how the pin-out are different and see if you could put a Impreza ECM in a Legacy. Yes it will physically fit but what really needs to be rewired. That may be the problem you guys are running into, Impreza vs Legacy.

Peace,

Greg
