Default Illuminated Cup Holders

I'm looking for a non tacky/rice looking way to do this. I hate struggling to put the drink back in the console when I drive at night. I was thinking cut the bottom out, use frosted plixiglass with an led, or even just an led mounted to the side of the holder.
Has anyone done this before?

I think it might hinder night vision to have bright lights on in the cabin. Go for it and let us know how it turns out. A bit rice in my opinion though, but its your car....

Bright isn't what I'm going for. A very subdued light, either white or green to match the dash. Just enough so out of the corner of my eye I can put the cup back without fumbling it.
I'll post up in this thread when I figure it out.
And no, I'm not getting that neon string crap from autozone.

i did this in my protege5. it took 15 minutes tops. i bought 2 LED's from radioshack and mounted them in the bottom of my cupholders by drilling a little hole in the bottom. i tapped the power from my headunit. they weren't super bright bright , but enough to give a little glow to the cupholder.

this pic makes them look brighter than they actually were since it was on a 4 sec exposure.

Just go to a computer store and buy some elwire.
w w w.xoxide.com/elwire.htm

It's super cheap and should do the trick. (Just glue it around the circumference of the cupholder bottom, and run the wires underneath the trim)

damn. i wish i had cupholders so i could do that! i have my seat back far enough for my long legs where i'm thinking about putting one of those plastic ones on the tunnel behind the console. it's almost a stretch, but would work i found and not be too much of a problem. those ones on the dash just suck butt....

I dont think ELWire would be bright enough in this situation. Its used in applications where you want to look directly at the light.

I did this in my car as I too needed to be able to see where my cupholders were in the dark. If you've ever driven across the country you would know how dark it tends to get and you cant see jack in you car. As long as it's done right it won't interfere with seeing the road.

What I did was get a couple LEDs, drilled holes in the cupholders and put the leds in there. It lights up the cupholders enough to see, but they're not that bright. I need to change one of the LEDs right now though cause they're not quite a color match. Tis what I get for going the cheap route for LEDs. I can take pics of my setup once I do this, or heck since you're in San Diego I can show you or even help ya with it.

use some ccfl rings, then it will look sort of like the dodge caliber with its heated/cooled cup holders. (at least i think its the caliber)
