Wow, this is a great idea - dunno why I never thought of it. I will be definitely doing this. I'll probably either go the LED route - gotta figure a way to drop 13.7V down to ~3V (or 6 if I wire in series), or will look into that EL wire stuff. What is that? It says it can be cut to any length. Do you just apply 12V to one end of the wire, GND to the other, and the wire just glows? If so that's damn cool. How bright is it? I agree that I'd want it very dim - just a hint of light so as to not be distracting but enough to see - I hate fumbling for the cupholder in the dark.

The glowing water bottles are cool too - this mod might just make me drink more water lol!

Another thing I have seen is in the HHR, there is a tiny LED Recessed into the Map Lights that aims down... Since it is recessed, you cant see the bulb... But for some reason, the entire center console has this slight blue glow to it... Its VERY nice...

Something that I've seen recently is in newer Audi's and the brand new BMW 3 series, they've got small blue (pin head sized) blue LED's that illuminate the cupholders (ceiling facing down), and some pointing to the radio, and in the back seat (dome light area), some are facing downwards..

VERY nice little ambient lighting.. Would be worth looking into.. I know I am!

The JDM Subaru's have illuminated rings in the cupholders. Check out this Legacy catalog...

I felt like doing this so I ran down to Radio Shack and hooked it up in about 30 minutes, for $3. I bought this part # 276-271. I installed it on the flat backside very low in the middle(middle backside not bottom); I put it near the bottom so it would reflect some light off the bottom of the cupholder. It's nowhere near as bright as the guy w/blue one above. Thinking of putting in a 2nd to make it just a little brighter. Since I put it in the center(of backside), I'll probably put this 2nd one just above it(vertically aligned). However, I would recommend putting 2 lined up horizontally on the backside near the bottom. I'll post some pics when I'm at my brother's house one day this week. he's got a great 10.1 M SLR.

Edit: Forgot to mention: just grounded it right there undernear the cupholder to a bolt, and ran power to my stereos illumination wire.

Also, although I didn't need to use this nor did I hook mine up like this, I had this website saved from awhile back for when I was going to do this

i did some thinking about this...and instead of the one LED on the bottom idea...im going WILD, uhh...kinda.

im going to be getting those flexible black lights that have the music switch(just for fun), and im going to wire it like an angel eye..around the bottom of my cup holders....installing switches where the DCCD control is on an STI (since i have nothing there)

so i can shut it off, turn it to always on, or turn it to pulse to the music....

should be funny

I connected my LEDs to the cigarette lamp power, so it only turns on when I turn on the parking or headlamps.

Honda did this with the Accords too. My buddies 04 or 05 coupe has a little orangeish led right by the map lights and shines right down onto the middle counsel. Can't tell its there but illuminates everything very well.

I thought about doing this too. Something subtle...

Question - If i pick up led's with a 12v resistor already built in, is it ok for me to just tap power from lets say my radio illum. wire or the cig. plug light wires? What about powering 2-4 of those said leds with either of those two sources?

Also, do we have any place in all four of the doors where theres power only when the car is turned on or when the interior lights are on?

If you put the LED in the side of the cup holder it will illuminate it better without letting much light out ot it. This is especially nice for if you use a super bright LED. The cup holder will then have a "glow" compared to a light that you can see in the ceiling. To make this look cleaner get a LED holder or http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=family at radioshack. Also to make wiring cleaner you can just get 2 conductor wire from homedepot to use. Hope this helps. And even though I am new please trust me on this, I come from a robotics background.

I know when we install alarms at our install bay we use a 1/8" drill bit and set a small hole where we want the LED and just the rounded tip comes up flush to the surface where we are mounting it VERY DISCREAT yet throws great light we use this on BMW's etc for mounting a discreat LED that still shine in the A-pillar so it blends with the fabric!

I can post pics tomorrow if people want to see what i mean!

But how do you hold the actual LED in place. I guess you could do it with super glue. But I would like to see how you do it since it sounds like your a pro.

If your eputting hte LED on a flat spot, drill a 1/4" hole and use a plastic LED holder.

If your eputting the LED on a curved spot, drill a 5mm hole and hotglue the LED in place from the back.

When I get around to doing this, Im going to cut a piece of acrylic to fit inside the cup holder, frost it. Then put a CCFL ring on the cup holder, and the piece of acrylic over it.

why the rolling of the eyes? thats kinda rude... but whatever... if i am back mounting it i just use the black hot glue we have, traps the light in from behind so it doesnt escape out the back and holds it in place.

i use this method almost daily we use the clear LED's that emit blue light so that the fabric/plastic/vynal color from around it goes through and makes it a color match by defualt. It actually looks quite clean and most people don't even notice the LED until it is lit!

I will post pics tomorrow in a sample piece of flat ABS

Ok well you can look at it as rolling eyes if you want. I don't see the eyes moving. I see the eyes looking up. Therefore the smiley is looking up, and your a pro so I would look up to you to do it right. Take it how you wish.

btw, I'm just wondering how distracted people get from having LEDs and lighted stuff in the cabin. I would like to put some strategically placed LEDs but don't know where yet.
