Arrow My gas gauge reads 50% off. anyone else?

Has anyone else had this problem. All of a sudden 2 days ago My gas guage reads very weird. Full is still full but when the tank is empty the gauge reads exactly half full. It's not like the gauge goes down to 1/2 full and then stops working. The gauge is acting as if the 1/2 full mark is the empty marker. The gauge goes down half as fast as it should so when I have 1/4 tank the gauge shows 3/4. weird huh??? Anyone else have this problem. I guess i need to take it in for Warranty. That will be REALLY fun. Can;t wait to see what they say. Thanks

Eric

PS, I didn;t know where to put this since there is no sort of "Other Problems" forum. Move it to where it needs to be if this is the incorrect forum. Thanks

I'm guessing you have a different fuel pump in there.

Mine does the same thing after an auto-x or rally-x - I think somehow either I have wires or something wrong in the "tree" that holds the pump.

I have to unbolt the lid of the tree and shake to read normally. Though one time I did an auto-x, which messed it up, and then a rally-x, which fixed it.

If you don't want to open it up, try some violent lane change maneuvers!

I've had a faulty fuel guage in my Legacy for over 2 years now. Its about 50%-75% off from what it should be. Sure its a little annoying but I manage by keeping track of mileage on the tripodometer. After about 300 miles from fill up or when the little gas light comes on I know that I need to gas up.

I had fuel gauge problems on my RS. It was attributed to a faulty sensor, and the dealer replaced it under warranty.

However, I have come to the conclusion that the newest Chevron filler nozzles don't work well with my RS. I always get about a gallon less than full and its never quite right. Anyone else have this problem?

Lightbulb The answer

Our cars have TWO (2) fuel level senders, one on each side of the tank. This is to minimize errors when parked off level or cornering. It sounds like one of your senders is bad - or stuck in the up (full) position.

I know the 95+ Legacy used 2 fuel senders, as does the new Impreza. And from the symptoms, it sure sounds like your car has 2 senders also, but I've never seen the schematic for a 2.2 car, so I can't swear to it.

Mine was a 2.5RS before it got an EJ22T transplant.
I'll check out the 2 sensor thing. I know I saw a float on the bracket that holds the fuel pump. I guess there could be another one somewhere.

The short block (Brand new) set me back $1,300 or so and yes, it is the closed deck with oil squirters.
