Cool Looking for a summer job either in CT or Western MA for fresh college grad

Hey everyone,

It turns out that the job I usually work over my summer breaks and winter breaks between college is downsizing for the summer, so there is a high chance that I will not be able to work there. With that said...

I am just about to graduate from Binghamton University (SUNY) in upstate NY. Thus, I have a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Law (basically a political science interdisciplinary major). I will be attending law school in the fall (not sure yet where exactly, still waiting to hear from a few schools), but right now I need a job, starting around May 30th and going until about August 10th. I need money to buy a laptop, pay back some money, get some rent money going until loans kick in to pay for my soon-to-be apartment wherever that is, and get some money in my pocket.

I am looking for either full or part time, preferably in the legal or government field, or in some kind of corporate atmosphere, or even something environmental or international related. I don't really mind being a paper-pusher. If all else fails, I will take what I can get. I do plan to travel somewhat to check out a few schools over the summer, so I'm looking for something slightly flexible, but I am mostly available. 9-5 Monday through Friday is best, or some variation of that.

Ordinarily I don't reach out like this on the net, but unfortunately my college, being a NY state school, is mainly tailored to the NYC/Long Island/North Jersey area. Although I may be moving down that way come August for law school, for the summer I will be located around Enfield, CT. I'm willing to travel as far north as, say, Palmer, MA. Springfield would be ideal. I'm willing to travel as far as West Hartford/Farmington/Middletown as far as the southern direction goes.

Any openings in your work? I'm not too concerned about pay. $10 an hour is fine for me, as that is what I was making at my previous job. Obviously the further away the potential job is, the more money I would need to offset fuel costs. Something tailored toward what I want to do, like I said, is best.

Oh, and if there are any lawyers on here, I'll gladly intern for you, paid or unpaid

PM me or post up here if you can help a fellow NESIC'er out

Thanks everyone!
-Mike

For $10/hour you should be able to find something in Hartford without a problem.

If you want ~10 dollars per hour and a relatively laid-back job, get a job at the front desk/concierge desk of a hotel. That's what I did my summer between college and law school and I loved it. I worked a 3-11 shift so I had one busy stretch and then a lot of time to read.

However, I had done an internship between my junior and senior year so I already had that under my belt. If you haven't worked in a corporate/legal setting yet, you may still want to try and find one of those positions.

yeah i haven't done any internships yet. i kind of want to, but unfortunately most don't pay, and most legal internships want you to be in law school already.

the hotel thing isn't a bad idea at all.

If you are looking for an internship in the legal department, you should apply to the ct judicial department. They accept juniors and seniors for a variety of positions and do not require students to be in law school. I applied there last summer and got in the probation department as that is what i wanted to do. It did not pay but the experiance and obtaining contacts was worth it. I am in the same boat as you, graduating and trying to find a job in the criminal justice system/legal system.

If you do not mind going to NJ, there are a bunch of internships paid and non paid if you go to the nj courts website. You just have to look around at state court websites. Good luck on the search though.
