Angry My Latest battle with my Subaru Dealership..(Long)

Here it is. I brought my car in to Scarborough Subaru in Toronto, ON (Canada)last Friday for an oil change and guess what.... while the mechanic was bringing the car around out front after the oil change, the manager of the dealership rammed my driver's side fender, damaging part of the door and the fender with another car while he was backing up.
Sure it was an accident, but the manager initially denied damaging the door I basically had to prove to him that the door was undamaged before he hit my car. Next after I left the dealership I noticed my alignment was off and went back to the dealership right away so that he would not think that I am making it up. So the manager asks me for a test drive. He drives the car around the block and is convinced that my car does not need one. So basically he is telling me that he knows my car better than me.

As for the fender, I wanted a new one, as the one that was on my car was brand new from a previous accident 2 weeks ago. The price difference between a new fender and to repair the one that is already on the car was $100. The manager insists on repairing the fender instead of replacing it, even though it is only a measely $100 difference. I guess that's the price of keeping their customers happy.

When I was inspecting the damage the manager actually had the nerve to say to me "Don't worry it's just a couple of dents, we can fix it, I didn't destroy your car"

Now does that make any sense??? He rams into my car which I bought for $30K thinks that its no big deal, but then is such a tight ass that he wouldn't spring for the new fender which is only $100 difference!!!

At first the manager of the dealership didn't even want to get me a rental car while my car was being fixed at the shop, until I kept on insisting for one, what an ASS!!! He made it sound like as if he was doing me a favour by getting me a rental. That's the least he could have done for running into my car.

At present my car is being repaired and will be ready Wednesday morning. The moral of this story is DO NOT GO TO SCARBOROUGH SUBARU FOR ANY TYPE OF SERVICING, because this is the level of service that you can expect. If the car is not repaired to my satisfaction you can bet I will be seeing him in court!!!

I would think that the manager of the dealership would be bending over backwards to make everything right, seeing that the accident involved his mechanic and himself. But NOOO....I basically had to bitch to get everything fixed the way it was before he rammed into my car. I probably wouldn't be so pissed off if the manager was nice about the whole incident, but his whole attitude was basically "***** happens get over it".

I have already forwarded a letter to Subaru of Canada, the Toronto Star Newspaper, the APA, and posted messages on all Subaru bulleting boards about my experience at this dealership. As far as I'm concerned the managers at that dealership can suck my D**K. Sorry just needed an outlet to vent.

I hope none of you go through this with your dealerships....

I would suggest going to Willowdale Subaru on Yonge St. north of Finch or Richmond Hill Subaru on Yonge north of Elgin Mills.

I will be servicing my car at Willowdale Subaru from now on!!!

What an assh*le(dealership)!
Hope you get it fix to your satisfaction.

I gotten the feeling that all Subaru dealership have an attitude problem with their customer services. The customer allways have to bitch like crazy to get what they want. The Mr. Niceguy approach never work.

When my warranty is up I won't be going back to a Subaru dealer.

I went to the Scarborough dealership for a test drive today. The salesman there treated me pretty nicely. Since they have no AUTO 2.5 there he actually got me a new 2.5 for test driving. Maybe only thier body shop is bad.

Subaru of Mississauga is good. Very low prices. But not sure how services are though. Wnet there only once. Seems nice. For test drives, go to Oakville Subaru as they have some really good roads to run around!

Valinux I wasn't bitching about their body shop. I was bit*ching about the way the General Manager of the dealership treated me after he f*cked up my car. If that's the way I get treated from the General Manager of the place, imagine you have a complaint about someone who works for him. He probably won't give two *****s about your complaint either.

H5N1 is right, the salesman will kiss your ass to get the sale, but once the car is sold you don't exist anymore.

I would have rather paid a few hundred dollars more for my car just to get better customer service.

Look I'm just telling you about my experience there from an owner's point of view. If you still want to buy and service your car there it's entirely up to you, but don't say you weren't warned. Apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way. A couple of owner's from the Toronto Club don't go to this ****ty dealership anymore because of the f*cked up customer service.

I certainly wouldn't want to give any kind of business to such an ASS!!!

WRXSTI I got a question. Is it ok for me to buy the car at Scarborough and take it somewhere else for maintainence?
For some reason my parents insist to buy the car in the scarborough dealer.

Here's my experiences with 3 Subaru dealerships in the GTA:

Scarborough Subaru: I was there on Wednesday to order several parts for my 92 SVX, and it took over an hour to get the right part numbers, order it, and pay. And they can't even cut my key properly, TWICE, with the key code. Plus the parts manager blames it on all my barrels in the car being busted. Never again...

Richmond Hill Subaru: Wheel not balanced properly at delivery, took it back at 1600k for first oil change, scheduled an appointment, took it in at 9am, said I would be back by 4pm because I had to be downtown by 6pm, and when I showed up at 4pm they haven't even started on the repair. Plus the service manager never apologized, was rude, and basically just stopped short of openly blaming me for rushing him at 4pm after he can't keep his promise. And the wheels were still not balanced properly after.

Willowdale Subaru: Polite, courteous, but don't know whether they are competent or not. Had an intermittent ABS light coming on and off, and they blamed it on the brake fluid (6 months old), flushed and refilled. Well, at least my mom was gullable to believe that. Didn't fix the problem.

My advice on buying: Get it from a broker, because they can get just about any car at prices better than any dealer would give an end-user, and they offer better service.

Servicing: Get only warranty work done at the dealer, and find a competent mechanic to do the regular maintenance and repairs. Won't void warranty, and will get work done right at a reasonable price.

I've been using the same mechanic for the past 8 years on 3 Subarus, 2 Volvos, and a VW, and he's never misdiagnosed a problem. He's always been fair on what he charges too.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Valinux, just on principle I would not purchase the car from Scarborough Subaru. I would not want to support that Ass of a General Manager in any way.

Why don't you take Vkykam's suggestion and go through a broker???

Had I known before what I know now, I would not have bought or serviced my car there at all!!!

The Scarborough dealer actually lied to me about their Superior Rust Proofing (SRP) option when I bought my 2.5RS. Since I live in Montreal I asked them if I can have the rust proofing done in Montreal and they said "NO PROBLEM". That was not the case. I had to drive my car to Toronto last week to get it done because Scarborough does not have any agreement with SRP in Quebec. I don't even think they have a SRP franchise here in Quebec! I should write a letter to Subaru Canada about that also.

Valinux... Buy your car from someone else. And you don't have to have it serviced from where you bought it. As promised by Subaru, my first maintenace was done for free and I did it at a dealership in Montreal. The Downtown Subaru dealer in Mtl has been very good to me so far so not all dealers are bad.

Umm now I am convincing my parents to buy it from a broker, but they are still leaning to get it from the Scarborough Dealer cuz they liked the attitude of the salesman and thus willing to give him the business if the price is OK.
People over the US board said the MY01 is coming in mid-August but the salesman told me it's coming in November. Now it seems that the Scarborough dealer lies a lot, so can someone tell me is the mid-August date for only US or both US and Canada? Cuz if it's coming in August I'll wait but it's november I can't wait that long and will settle for MY00.

Actually, I've had experience with a 4th dealership, Downtown Subaru.

Sad part is, it's just as bad as Scarborough. Bought my 95 Legacy there, with a GE extended warranty. The sales guy was nice, they were clearing 95s out in Feb 96, and got a good deal. But when it got totalled last year, I wanted my prorated part of the warranty refunded, and GE promptly sent it to Downtown Subaru as they were supposed to.

Call Downtown Subaru, no return calls, went down there, and they checked and said no cheque. Called GE, they sent me a copy of the cheque, dated 3 full weeks before I went down to inquire about the cheque, and when I showed up with proof, they were not apologetic, and made it as if I was inconveniencing them, probably because I wasn't buying a car from them, and reluctantly handed over the cheque.

The salesmen at dealerships will always be (shallow) nice to win your business, but they know what the odds are of repeat business/referals. Brokers on the other hand can get any car, and can get much more referrals, and hence they will remain friendly AFTER the purchase as well.

And in regards to Scarborough Subaru, they promised they would deliver the parts to my mechanic this morning, after I had fully paid for all parts on Wednesday, and my mechanic receives a call at 3pm this afternoon from them saying that they can not deliver it because they had no driver. When I went to pick up the part, they basically said it wasn't their problem that their driver called in sick, that there is nothing they can do. So when I asked the parts guy if he ever heard of a courier, he had no answer, and when I asked why I didn't get a phone call until 3pm when they promised it would be there in the morning, again, no answer.

At this point, I would not set foot into Scarborough Subaru even if they were the last dealer left in Canada. I'd just order it from the states instead, and probably get it sooner too...

I hear quite a few dealer incentives are based on customer satisfaction on both purchase and at service. Wonder what would happen if our collective sent letters to Subaru Canada about our experiences.

Vkykam, my letter will be going off to Subaru of Canada this week.

Apparently when I was at the bodyshop yesterday getting the imperfections fixed on the car. Scarborough Subaru called the bodyshop and was sending another car over to them. The story was, they were prepping a car to deliver to a customer and the service mechanic smashed the car ($3000 worth of damage). Now this is 2 times in a span of about 2-3 weeks.

For those of you that are thinking about purchasing a car from that dealership, BEWARE!!!! Not only would it be bad to take it there for servicing, but imagine you are buying a car there and they smash it while they are getting it ready for you. The dealership would probably not even tell you that they had an accident with your car, they would probably just try to cover it up, and still sell you the car as new.

Try Subaru of Mississauga. Ask for Darryl. Nice guys, good price. So far I've only been back for my 6,000km service, so I can't tell you much about their competence as mechanics.
I mentioned my intention to buy the car a few months before I actually did (no downpayment). When it was finally time to buy it, they had a complete file waiting, all paperwork done, and the car was ready and waiting. Strange that they seem so much better than the other dealerships, maybe it's the proximity to SOC.

Erik
(PS: No I do not work for them, and I am in no way affiliated with them. They have impressed me, that's all.)

wrxsti: u have too much time on your hands. not fair to condemn an entire dealership for the action of one employee. for every negative comment you will find a positive one. i would love to have been there to hear how you ACTUALLY handled the situation. every tale has 2 sides.

I went to other Subaru dealerships in the GTA when I was looking around for my car. I went to Scarborough Subaru and had good sales service and so far.no problems with the service dept. I don't know what other issues that wrxsti had with the people there but maybe he had a bad attitude to begin with, insulting language and behaviour could explain what happened....I work in customer service, can be stressful when customers yell and shout and I know how some times there are two sides to every story.

Don't try any of their services, except for BASIC oil change
Everything else is a ripoff.
I don't know where they grow their techs.
Every noise is deemed normal until you push them hard enough to admit it, and it takes weeks , if not months.
3 visits to diagnose a squeaking punctured tire, selling a 4 -wheel alignment in the middle.
That's exactly what you want for your $100/hr.
