Hi guys. Has anyone had any problems getting the rear diff filler plug off (I havent even tried the drain).
I can't get the filler off. Ive tried everything I can think of. Impact wrench, 24" breaker bar, etc. Nothing seems to be getting it loose... Any other suggestion what I could try? Thanks.

How about a 36" breaker bar :-D? I've never had a problem getting one off with just a 12" 1/2" drive socket wrench to be honest. The only other things I can suggest is tapping it and around it on the diff cover with a hammer (gently) to try and loosen things up.

I couldn't even get mine off by hammering on the ratchet.
Recently I went in for a partial 60k mile service and just asked the dealer to put the synthetic in the rear for me. A whole lot easier. ![]() I've read that an epoxy is used on the rear diff plugs. Brian, ever hear of that? Good luck, Dennis |

I used air/impact wrench gun. As soon as the bolt moved, I used regular 1/2in wrench to remove the filler bolt and the drain bolt. They are very tight.

Use your impact. I just changed my diff fluid last weekend and was having the same problem, until I decided to use the impact. The plugs got a little gnarled, but I dont really think anyone's gonna notice. Just make sure that the drive of the impact is in the plug as far as you can push it. The epoxy that bluesubie is referring to is most likely the lock-tite. make sure to use some when replacing the plugs, but not too much.

I had the impact on there for a good 30 seconds or so. How long did it take to pop yours free?
Im really worried about stripping the head of the plug ![]() |

It didn't take 30 seconds, maybe 3 seconds... Make sure your pressure regulator set high enough.
I dont think you really need to worry about stripping them out, just make sure you have the drive pushed in all the way. I noticed after I had them out that I probably could have removed them without any damage if I had just pushed the impact in further. You have a 1/2" drive right? |

Yeah I put a 6" long 1/2" extension on the gun (the drive on the gun is a weird shape. tapers on the end, so if i didnt use the extension, it would really kill the plug -- which is what i did first before putting the extension on). Had it up to around 90psi. Ill try bumping it a bit more.
Ill just wait till exams are over though (ie incase I break something. hehe) Thanks for the suggestions |
