Question Noise over 100mph on WRX

My brand new WRX makes a rather loud whistling noise whenever I reach speeds around 100mph. The noise seems to come from the passenger side window. I believe I saw something about this on a forum before. Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to fix it? Thanks in advance.

It's air passing through the crack in the folding mirror. You could put felt or something in there, or have it filled/painted by a body shop. I can't imagine why you need to be travelling at 100 mph for any given length of time anywhere but on a track, in which case the helmet you are wearing would block out the noise .

Question

I've been to NYC quite a few times and the cabs (who drive like a-holes) barely get their rigs over 50!
Anyway, the Captain was right. It's your mirrors.

Just for the record...I was just curious to know where the noise was coming from, it doesn't really bother me. And you gotta be kidding when you say you can't imagine going over 100 except on a track. A sports car is meant to be driven fast when the roads permit (and upstate NY has some nice roads).

Mmmm, 100mph on public roads.... good idea. I will expect to see your "I totalled my WRX" thread in New Age General before year's end. Yes, the WRX is a sports car, but "it's meant to be driven fast" because it's a sports car is a ludicrous comment, and you will find that about 90% of this board is more level-headed than that. I truly hope the only person you "run into" is a State Trooper and not someone who had the luck of the draw to be sharing the same stretch of road as you.

As a resident of Upstate NY... slow the hell down! Any road with a speed limit of 65 does not "permit" 100+ mph cruising.

I'm sure none of you guys have ever taken your car above the speed limit right? I dont drive that fast normally and this was on a backroad for less than a minute, please dont assume anyone was cruising along for an extended amount of time unless they say so.

We don't need to debate whether going 100+ on a public road is smart or not. It isn't.

I'll admit, I did it once for about 5 seconds in my MR2. Never again. Just not worth it.

Exceeded the speed limit? Hell yeah. 100 mph on a public road? Only once, and with a police escort. Save it for the track so you endanger only yourselves. Save yourselves the trouble of saying I'm a wuss or whatever as I really don't care what your opinions of me are .

I didnt call you a wuss or challenge anyones masculinity so I dont know where you came up with that one. I just dont think people in glass houses should throw stones. How many times have you driven 80 or 90? what do you usually cruise at? I just dont appreciate people making assesments about how people drive and what kind of person they are from a single post about a strange sound at high speed. Nobody said "hey I drive 100+ mph everywhere and this noise is really bugging me" Just lay off a little on the patronizing/lecturing, not everyone is a reckless wanna be race car driver.

Woah...a lot of hostility in this room. When I drive that fast of course it doesn't last too long and I never put others in danger except myself because I do it on EMPTY roads and very late at night or very early in the morning. Unless I hit a racoon or something, I'm the only one in danger. From the sounds of it, you guys are probably gonna lash out on me for endangering the lives of 4 legged creatures as well. North Ursalia thanks for wishing me the best of luck with my car...that was really nice of you. I think as a moderator your replies should be a bit more objective. And guys really...chill out, I asked a simple question and it turned into World War 3. Take it EZ.

Silverbullit, I said that because it is the usual reply... not accusing you of calling me either . IFANTIG, I don't have to be objective here, as this is not my forum to moderate- everywhere but the few forums I do moderate, I am me, and even then there is "moderator me" and just plain "me." I have the same right to my opinion and to express it as do you or anyone else, regardless of the moniker slapped on me by Alex and Nick .

Default Get a Legacy

My '00 Legacy is tight and quiet at 120 On public roads even, although I haven't gone much over 100 since I was out west. Around here it's hard to find a place to safely hit triple digits, much less a place AND time.

Cheers,

Not sure where you folks live but HERE if you aren't close or pushing triple digits before you get close to Atlanta you are going to be PUSHED there by someone in a fat SUV.

When road, conditions, and traffic permit I drive as fast as I safely can. Remember when they increased the national limit the safety NAZI's were beside themselves with worry over the general health of all the traveling public? The numbers prove that speed doesnt kill!!! Being a stupid moron does. Please do not assume the people who drive fast are doing so recklessly. I know plenty of people who drive under or at the limit who frankly suck so I dont believe its the speed that kills and that a little judgement goes a long way to ensuring that even the adrenaline junkies like me, and the majority of the members I know, a safe passage home.

Anywhere from a few under the limit to 5-7 over. That's usually it for me.

I agree here. Its more about judgement than it is the actual speed. I have 0 accidents and I have driven more cars than I can count and I dont always abide by the speed limit. I would loose my mind driving 55 MPH 120 miles a day! And I dont think I have a race car either I drive the same speed as I always have and before I had a slow lethargic boat for a car.

You aernt going to kill anyone anyworse going 5mph over the speed limit that you would going to speed limit. Lets face it if you hit someone going 65 its pretty much all over. And you aernt going to kill anyone if you are going 100+ in some rural wide open area with no other cars around.

If tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it does it make a noise? If a car drives 100+ MPH and no one is around to see it is it really going 100+ MPH? Its all individual perception. What if 100MPH was the speed limit on all roads? Whats the difference between a 10 mile stretch of desert road and a track?Just chill everyone.

If an idiot in a forest wraps his WRX around a quiet tree at 100 mph are my insurance premiums going to go up? If you're willing to pay to fix your car and keep the insurance co's out of it, then by all means, go hog wild. Otherwise, slow down.

I'm so sick of that insurance argument, I dont have any obligation to keep your insurance rates low. I pay MY insurance for MY car and thats all that matters, if you have a problem with YOUR rates take it up with YOUR insurance company. If I'm driving along and a kid runs into the street and I swerve and hit a parked car, I should pay for it out of my pocket to keep your rates low? get real, this Idea that I somehow owe it to everyone who owns a WRX to drive slow and cautious because I want to keep their rates low is idiotic. Why dont you worry about how you drive and leave everyone else alone because in the end thats what decides your insurance rates not me.
