Talking Building my first PC!

Hey OT, yes another build your own PC thread!

I just purchased the components this weekend and they are going to ship today. A couple of big Items are:

2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo E6600
2 GB Ram
400 GB HD
EVGA nVidia 7600 GT SLi capable video card
Windows Vista Ultimate
22 in dell wide screen monitor

The only question I have is what is a good AV program for vista?!

I'm disappointed that it isn't a 486.

Same ones that are good for XP (Symantec, etc.); just make sure you buy the right version for Vista.

Good luck on the build.

I hope you don't do a lot of gaming if you're planning on installing Vista.

7600GTs are outdated by now, consider and 8xxx series GPU.

couple problems i see here. you're not being very specific on the components.

ram: what speed? make sure it's compatible with your motherboard. dual channel?

hard drive: sata hard drives are mainstream now for high end rigs

video card: i don't think there's that many programs/games that even take advantage of SLi?

operating system: windows vista ultimate?? the general response i've read is that the majority of people are going to wait until at least the first service pack comes out so they can work out the bugs. unless you want some nice eye candy, you should be fine with xp pro or linux.

monitor: make sure it has dvi connector, noticable difference compared to vga.

other than that, make sure you have a couple fans circulating air on the front and rear of the case, ventilation is extremely important.

I don't do a lot of gaming. I am primarily going to use this for home use and photo processing. The motherboard I got is very expandable and even capable of taking the new quad cores. Price will come down in a couple of years.
I figure if I need more video power, I can just drop another in SLi. I would like the 8800, but those things are over $500. A little beyond what I was looking to spend.

RAM: DDR2 800 Dual Channel (compatible with MB)
It is a SATA drive

Monitor does have the DVI connector.

I figured that I would go with vista as I use the machine primarily for home computing.

Should have ordered 4gb of RAM. Other than that, overclock that chip to 3.2Ghz and call it a day.
