Its a short ram, not cold air. And yes, it should be a piece of cake to install.

i think spt and cobb intake are the only ones that you don't need to get tuned for.

True to a point. The 03 was much more forgiving than the later years. I ran my 03 with a Helix DP, Greddy EVO cat back, no cats, intake, etc for 2yrs or more and never had any issues at all.

I will say that once I did get a tune, it was by far the best thing I ever did to that car.

I agree, the 02-03 were better than the latter year impreza's. You could open up the exhaust, and just crank up the boost (within reason) and all one had to do was watch the EGT's and partial throttle-full boost situations.

Here ya go. Yes, ideally you should get a tune. It will unleash more horse power and over all make your car run better. Do you need to persay? Yes and no. As I mentioned the 02-03 years were flexiable when it came to mods like you have. That said, a tune will make it better period.

Now in regards to AP or ecu flash, I say go for the ECU flash. The AP will give YOU the ability to swap maps yourself. BUT you will still need a tunner map if you want the best bang for the buck. The COBB off the shelf maps arnt the way to go if you ask me. ??? 600 for AP??? And let says another 600 for a pro tunner? Thats alot of money!

So, I suggest you PM LargeOrangeFont. Take your car to him, go road tune, datalog and pay MUCH MUCH less than going to a proshop.

LargeOrangeFont and one another buddy of mine both did my 03 and I was VERY pleased. And I didnt pay much at all and I got a copy of my stock map and 3 other maps too.

Keep in mind though. They have the tools to change your map and keep your stock one too. But if you need to revert back to your stock map. You will need to go see them.

Thats the only thing the AP has on getting your ECU maps swaped out using opensource. Then again, if you have a laptop and the tictrax cable, and know what your doing, then you can swap your maps out yourself. I watched them and I think I could do it. But I dont own a laptop nor the cable.

+1 for road tunning using open source. Why pay more for a dyno sheet? Im not saying the pro tunners arnt good. But I dont think tunning the ECU is rocket science either.
