Post strange noise

I have almost no idea how to describe this, but here goes...

I live in Boston, and they just re-paved the end of the highway I take to work every day. When I'm driving on this brand new pavement, the road noise is low enough that I notice a strange wind-like sound. Every time I hear it, I'm reminded of the echo you hear underwater when you hit metal against metal.

Normally, I'm at about 3000rpm in 5th (around 75mph), but I notice this noise on this same stretch of highway at anywhere from 40mph to 100mph. (in 4th or 5th)

The weird thing is that the frequency of the noise changes even if I don't speed up, slow down, accelerate, or brake. It kind of oscilates back and forth, but without regularity (except that it always sounds the same...)

I've never driven a full time AWD before, so perhaps it's something with the AWD? Otherwise, I've got no clue...

Sorry for the fairly poor description - like I said, it's faint enough that I can't hear it all that well when I'm on "used" pavement, and unless I point it out, most of my friends don't notice it until I mention it.

Anyone have a guess on this?

thx

The sound probably has something to do with how the pavment settled. I have had the same thing happen on a road around me. At first I thought it was something with the car but I have had it happen in 3 different cars, front, rear, and all wheel drive cars.
