do you guys have this problem?
[url=http://www.geocities.com/hobiegary/hesitation.htm]
do you guys have this problem on ur 99'-01'GC8 or WRX? it just never goes smooth from the 1st to 3rd gear. i mean i have to step on the gas to maintain the smoothness, but when i step off the gas and the clutch, the car just shocks back at you! it gets bigger shock as the rpm goes higher. so is it called back fire? it really SUCKS when im stuck in the traffic jam, u know! i mean come on, what's the problem with it? all my friend's hondas and others don't have this. will the link above be the answer? and how about the cusco shifter bushing? can it resolve the problem too? please help! -Jun

learn to drive more smoothly...
It's partly because the impreza is all wheel drive. There's a lot of rotating parts connected to the engine when you're in gear. It's called engine braking, I think.
I'm not the smartest guy on here, but I know what you're talking about. Our car is not much fun when stuck in stop-and-go freeway traffic. You think that you're having fun? Try it with a stiff ACT clutch on there. A big part of it is probably because you're not being as smooth with the gas pedal as you could be. Our cars were built with performance in mind, and you tend to sacrifice a few little creature comforts. I've found that it's easier to be smooth on the gas pedal when you're driving barefoot, or with very thin, soft soled shoes, such as wrestling shoes or maybe certain running shoes. Personally, I drive with my right foot barefoot, and a shoe on my left foot (easier to press hard on the stiff clutch) later, -scott- |

easy solution to your problem that might upset you, but if you think about it, just downshift from 3rd to 2nd and then from 2nd to 1st, if you wanna be smooth learn how to use every gear.....

Throttle respone+low end torque+ lots of drivetrain=lash
In lower gears our cars have alot of torque, and a very responive throttle. Not good for smooth on/off throttle while creeping along. Try driving in a higher gear (at like 2000 rpm) It reduces the power available so you dont get lash. Also work on getting on and off the throttle smoother. Sometimes if I know I need to coast and stop, I disengauge the clutch. This allows you to go from power into coasting smoothly. Re engauge the clutch once you've stopped, or need to go again. I do alot of stop and go driving in Chicago and have no problems with lash anymore. |

The hesitation problem is definitely not because of AWD. I have FWD, and I have the same problem. I have found that shifting at a higher RPM eliminates the problem somewhat. But all subies do it, and it's funny because the only other car that does it on a regular basis is a Hyundai...I work at the emissions station, and I drive a lot of different cars. Also, some of it can be eliminated with careful clutch manipulation...but that comes from driving your car an awful lot.

do you guys think our JDM brothers have the same problem too? but, as i saw in those best motoring vcds, their GC8 wrx doesn't appear to have that problem. they shift just like those hondas and other imports; i mean in the 1st or 2nd gear they valved pretty high and the car doesn't choke back at ya.
as i checked out the mod forum, it mentioned that the cusco shifter bushing does wonder. and what about thishttp://www.geocities.com/hobiegary/hesitation.htm those ppl who got this, said they feel like having a brand new car!! |

First off, shifter bushings aren't going to do anything about engine braking! All those are going to do is stiffen up your shifting between gears. I have the bushings in my car. It just smooths out the shifting between gears and takes out the notchy feeling while shifting.
What you are experiencing is AWD! And an engine with BALLS! Honda's lack balls! Plus, they only drive 2 wheels. If you ever get a chance to drive a Honda, God forbid, you'll notice that there is NO power between say 1000 RPM to 6000 RPM, the engine simply revs as the transmission is running. And since ther is only 2 wheels spinning, there is less drag in the drive train. AWD tends to make the car a little jerky. Easiest thing to do, just step on the clutch and avoid engine braking all together! (Supposidly stretches rods.) Or sell the car and get an automatic. -Jason SDC |

Rudy,
Yeah, I work at the Bel Air station. If your CEL is on when you pull into the lane and someone sees it...you won't be tested. If the light comes on DURING the test, you'll be ok. Since you have AWD, if you have to get tested in the near future bring your car up now and you'll get a regular tailpipe test. If you wait, they are trying to bring back the AWD dyno, and your car will be driven. The tailpipe test is easier to pass. If you come up there just ask for me (Jarrad, pronounced Jared). I'll hook you up...but I'll expect a favor in return... Jazz95 |
