Default Grill Mesh mod/ light covers...necessary?

There is a lot out there on the mesh grill mod (gutter guard) and the driver's light covers. Somewhere on here I saw that these mods were "necessary" because of road debris breaking the lights' glass and messing the radiator and intercooler fins.

But are these really necessary? Is there a predominance of problems if these mods aren't done (I'm speaking of a strictly street-driven car)?

If there is little chance of something breaking from the road debris, why would I want to hinder air flow and light output (aside from the cool looks)?

Thanks all.

Token face (I didn't want to be left out)

Kostamojen is right...when it's *mod*, it shouldn't be *necessary*

Default Didn't help...

OK, let's get back to the reason for the question...is it likely that my WRX will be damaged if I don't install the light covers and the mesh over the intakes? Do a lot of people report cracks in the lights and bent fins in the radiator/intercooler?

By the way, there are some mods that can be deemed necessary. First generation Mustangs have a quirky habit of spraying gas onto the passengers when the car is rear-ended (really bad when the gas ignites and burns the people). Most suggest 'modifying' the trunk so this doesn't happen.

Well, I noticed rock marks on the a/c condensor after less than 1000 miles, so I did the 'gutter guard' on the lower grille and on top of the intercooler. Have STI mesh fog light covers on order. Will probably be doing a Stongard or similar this Spring to protect nose. Not sure about headlights - may replace those anyway with aftermarket lights.

Aboot the headlights I think this might just be over reaction. I remember hearing aboot how bad the windshield was and thinking that the damn thing would spider if a snow cone dropped on it. But I've had highway rocks smack really hard into it and nothing happened.
