Question Need advice on a head unit.

Never even been in this forum before, so you'll have to excuse me if I do something stupid. I would have done a search but I don't really know what to search for.

I'm looking for a decent head unit that just has a front-load cd player, preferably a detachable face, and, here's the biggie: a mini-plug (1/8") auxiliary input on the front of the unit. That's my main requirement, but of course I want it to look good and produce decent sound (but I'm definitely no audiophile).

My situation is this: I have a portable hard-disk based mp3 player. My current setup is just the factory cassette player with a crappy cassette adapter that I have to constantly push and replace, etc. I want to be able to plug this in with a male-male miniplug cable (out of the headphone jack). Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I can plug this in to the back of a something, so that I wouldn't have to have the cable sticking out the front. I really have no idea what I'm looking for, I just have a couple requirments. I want the cd player because it's nice to be able to play cds in the car.

So what should I do/buy? I don't want to spend more than $150 - $200. Anyone else in this situation?

marc -
I had the same dilema as you. I went with the clarion dxz715 deck. Got it for about $250 brand new off ebay. It has aux. input in the back and I just connected a RCA to 3.5mm adapter and had the cable come out where I set my mp3 player. It works and sounds great. If you don't want to spend quite that much you can get a lower level clarion that has aux. inputs as well. Hope this helps.

My Nakamichi CD-45z has a aux input on the rear also. Very affordable for high end sound. I paid less then $400 I think. It's not flashy and looks OEM when installed. I think that is a good thing. I liked the JVC MP3 deck , but it looked really attractive to thieves... I know I used to be one

Get a decent Kenwood unit and the plug adapter that plugs into the changer port on the back of the deck. The only place that seems to know about the adapter is Crutchfield.

JVC KD-SH77 is exactly what you are looking for.. has a 1/8" jack on the front for an mp3 player.

Alternatively.. the kd-sh99 has a built in mp3 player.. but is pricier.

The 77 can be found for ~200 if you do your homework.

i know that a lot of aiwa head units have the 1/8" input you are looking for. you might wanna consider these because they arent very expensive. I would personally buy a better brand like pioneer or kenwood and just convert the plug to rca to plug into the aux. input but these decks are more expensive... try this internet dealer if you want some good prices Car Media 1

I also just put the Blaupunkt San Jose MP41 into my car, and it's flat out wonderful. I had picked up the Aiwa MP32, which has the front jack, but as the player skipped fairly easily I switched to the Blau which has a 10 second buffer, and NEVER skips. And it has the ability to add a input jack from the rear connectors if you need it, but with MP3 and WMA built in, and for under $235 with a nice 25 wpc RMS amp, and three sets of outputs, why not go this way? Oh, it matches the silver on the WRX like it was made for it too!

And if that's too much money, you can get the new MP3000 which is the same machine without the remote and the sub outputs for right around $200.

I guess I really don't need the front input at all, it would look nicer and work better if I just got one with an RCA aux input on the back and got an adapter for it. So here are my new requirements:

Aux input on back.
Slide-in cd-player on front (none of the flip down kinds), plus if I can get an mp3 cd player for cheap (less than $200), that's always a plus.
It's gotta have decent sound output.
It has to look good and be made by a major brand.

That's it. I'm sure there are pleny of cheap players with aux inputs, I want something above bottom-line, but nothing too extravagant. Anyone help me out? Thanks in advance.

The JVC is the best bet for the 1/8 front plug. Ive sold alot at the shop and had no problems, good SQ

The Blaupunkt original (year 1999) Funline series HUs sound like they fit your requirements. The newer 2000/2001 models moved to a flip-down face for access to the built-in CD player.
I've had both a Nevada and an Alaska I; for the Alaska I, I got the cable that plugs into the back for aux input. I'm not sure if the Nevada allows that. You should be able to get these decks pretty cheap online if you can find them because they would be close-out (should be way less than $200).

Blue or Red Nevada is available from Crutchfield for $140:

The Nevada features a striking blue faceplate, so you can enjoy impressive radio reception and crystal-clear CD sound quality while spicing up your dash! Bass Logic gives you expanded low-end control, and you also get source tone/loudness memory. Direct Software Control (DSC) has 18 menu options to make using the stereo even more fun. Blaupunkt's "Thummer" remote is optional.

Add tunes with a 10-disc changer and you'll save $$ with our package discount. (Separate adapter required when connecting to CDC-A071 changer.)
Key Features:

detachable blue face
seek/manual tuning
travel presets
random play
repeat play
intro scan
source tone and loudness
Bass Logic
two sets of preamp outputs with included adapter
audible search
CD pause
Direct Software Control
DigiCeiver technology
CD changer controls
auxiliary input capable if no changer is connected (adapter required)
clock
17 watts RMS/40 peak x 4 channels
CD frequency response 20-20,000 Hz
CD signal-to-noise ratio 90 dB
FM sensitivity 12 dBf
1-year warranty

Of course, the blue color is why it's cheap... You may be able to find a black one (same specs) online.
