Default Cat Converter Warranty Question

I just took my car into a local shop today as I've been hearing a rattling in my exhaust and they said there is a metal pearl in my catalytic converter that is out of place and my catalytic converter needs to be replaced to fix it. After I told them I wasn't paying the obscene amount of money they wanted the manager told me that Subaru's Warranty is 8/80 for the cat converter and I should take it to a dealership.

I'm planning to make an appointment but am worried that they might push back on the warranty as I have an after market air intake. It's an Injen Cold Air Intake with a K&N Cone filter on the end. I have a short throw shifter as well but that's not related. It's an 01 Impreza RS.

Anyone know if I should be prepared to get push back or if I'll probably get it fixed under warranty without question? I'm in Boston, MA if anyone has experience with dealers in the area.

a CAI shouldn't cause the cat to fail... should be a non-issue.

Metal pearl???

You probably either have a loose heatshield or a rock under the shields.

How did they come to this "metal pearl" diagnosis?

No Idea how they came to that diagnosis. They said originally they tightened the heat shields but it was still making the noise so they took a closer look and they said it sounds like something broke off inside the converter. The mechanic called it a metal pearl. Who knows what actually broke off... probably just tried to dumb it down for me thinking I couldn't understand an actual part name.

cat core (made up of certain metals and stuff) is probably comming apart and rattling. Should be covered under 8/80 if thats the case. Mods...well you are taking your fate in your own hands at that point.

Most of the time we see are the heat shields rattling.

Cat. Converters are covered 8/80. I agree with Blackfang, that most of the time, it's the welded on heatshielding that separates and causes noise.

Either way, the intake and filter probably will be overlooked as a failing cause of a cat. converter.
