If you have stock intake, stock downpipe, and stock BPV, you'll be fine.

I tried running 4-5 gallons, it helped bring it down 7-9 pts on the HC but that was about it. It wasn't enough for me anyway...

Removing the ABS has nothing to do with emissions, therefore you shouldn't have a problem.

ABS and Air Bag faults will not cause your vehicle to fail.

My 2005 STi just passed the smog test. I drove it a couple of miles before the test to heat up the catalytic converter.
  • BPM GT turbo back exhaust with one high flow cat in the mid-pipe and silencer installed.
  • Second O2 sensor with extended fitting after high flow cat.
  • Trimmed stock turbo heat shield to fit catless divorced downpipe.
  • Cobb Accessport Stage 2 Protune on 91 octane.
  • Mechanical boost and EGT gauges mounted in center of dash.
An older gentleman was running a test only shop behind a gas station. He offered a free retest within 30 days. The hood was opened and he pretty much looked around the driver's side only. He did not look under the car at all. A plug was connected into the OBDII port and the sniffer into the tailpipe.

Idle Emission Test Results

Test #1: 850 RPM
Test #2: 2650 RPM

HC (PPM)
#1: Max 100, Measured 70 - He says this number is high for a 2005 car.
#2: Max 130, Measured 17

CO (%)
#1: Max 1.00, Measured 0.13
#2: Max 1.00, Measured 0.63

CO2
#1: 13%
#2: 13%

O2
#1: 2.0%
#2: 0.7%

Default Failed Visual and MIL Check Engine Light Test, but passed emissions.

I went to a shop in Aliso Viejo, two guys working tag team on the job.

2005 Saab 92x
Cobb DP with High Flow Cat
Cobb TBE Exhaust
Stock Uppipe
V1 Access Port

The guys there looked at the diagram on the hood. They said I'm missing the catalytic converter, wiring to sensors, missing oxygen sensor.

I also failed the MIL/Check Engine Light Test due to failure to successfully compete OBD self tests. I'm going to put the stock DP and Exhaust back on, should I unmarry the AccessPort? Or is the MIL/Check Engine Light Test another issue? I also just had my 60k service done and spark plugs changed like 50-60 miles ago.

I just plugged in my PLX Kiwi Wifi ODBII scanner, it says I failed 2 of the 5 readiness monitors. Catalyst and Oxygen Sensor Monitoring. From what I read I need to drive the car some more?

I got one free retest so I need to make sure I get it right.

I passed the Idle Emissions
Test #1 718 RPM
Test #2 2544 RPM

%CO2
#1 14.4
#2 14.5

%O2
#1 0.4
#2 0.1

HC (PPM)
#1 meas 62
#2 meas 25

#2 0.30

Drive your car for a bit and go to another shop. The guys at the shop you went to were doing a good and full inspection and were right to fail you. The monitors should reset after a good session of mixed driving on the street and freeway. If you go to another more lenient shop, you should be able to pass with your setup. You just need to make sure your monitors are set.

You can get almost any smog shop to check your readiness monitors for you before a test. If you don't pass those, the rest of the test will be a waste of time anyway.

^Agree!

The reason for failing OBD Self-test is because either a check engine light (MIL) was removed/serviced and/or battery disconnection/voltage loss to the vehicle PCM. I recommend driving the vehicle 60-100 miles on fwy after performing any of the above. Most smog, repair shops or even auto parts stores can check monitors at no charge if you ask nicely

KEEP IN MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!: For vehicles model year '96-'00 you can have 2 monitors "Not Ready" and still pass, HOWEVER on '01-newer you may only have 1 "Not Ready" in order to pass.

Its been about 300 miles, my scanner now reads 5 of 6 readiness monitors good, only one being stubborn is Oxygen Sensor monitor. So technically I can pass with 1 "not ready". Thanks for the info.

You would lower HC & CO slightly but not enough to make a huge difference.

Question 2011 wrx from oregon - why do i need a smog test??!

hi all - new to the forum and subaru here.

picked up a 2011 wrx limited wagon at a dealer in oregon a few weeks ago. couldn't find any in cali in the color / options i wanted. was assured by the dealer that the car is 50 state emissions certified (the hood says so also), but the DMV here in CA is insisting that i need a smog check.

dealer claims they've sold 100s of cars to people in CA... but the DMV did not seem at all interested or impressed by the emissions certifications the car came with or that were mailed to the DMV directly from the dealer.

anyone have experience with this? we all know that the exact same car could have been sold in california, but at this point it seems to be a procedural matter.

thanks in advance for any advice! loving the car so far - it's a big change from my s2000... and it has a back seat for a car seat, which i'll need in about 6 weeks.

From what I understand all cars coming into CA from out of state have to be smoged within like 30 days. I can check with my wife in the morning when she gets up. She work for the DMV.

True^ ANY vehicle from out of state is required to do a smog inspection in california in order to register as a california car. The reason that they don't care much for other state's emission inspectiong is because here in ca, the state is far more strict.

Default OC smog friendly shop?

Anyone know of a smog friendly shop in the Orange County area?

I just moved back to SoCal after living in South Carolina where I bought my 05 STi. I need to get new CA registration this week and I'm looking for a shop that might be less strict on the visual inspection.

PM me if you have any recommendations. Thanks.
