Default Byers Imports Won't Honor Recalled 02

Byers Imports of Columbus Ohio won't honor the Subaru recall for my O2 sensor, because I have an intake, and a muffler.

I could understand it if I had headers or a turbo, but not this!

What should be my first steps to get this fixed?

Thank You!

Contact SOA immediately. The recall is for defective parts...parts that were defective from the factory install. You could have a turbo on your car and they'd still have to honor the recall. You are not making a warranty claim, Subaru is replacing a defective part (i.e. one that did not work as new). I'd get in the face of the service manager and ask him his reasoning behind this BS.

Default Byers Imports Reply

Dear Nathan:

Since you purchased a used vehicle from another dealership & this vehicle has
undergone several aftermarket modifications, warranty work must me authorized
by Subaru PRIOR to any warranty or recall service is performed - Their number
is (800) WANT-AWD - be sure to tell them there are several modifications to
the air intake & exaust and they can schedule for a factory rep inspection at
the dealership of your choice.... Hatfield Auto Mall is also a Subaru Dealer
in the Columbus area.

If you read your owner's manual, it is clearly outlined warranty / recall
service on vehicles with modified componets.

Sincerely,
John P. Curry

I dunno, that's pretty thick BS. They can't deny a recall or warranty coverage, only SOA can do that. I'm guessing there are no other dealers in your area?

I would call SOA anyway, as this dealer certainly has his panties in a bunch. They have to prove the aftermarket part had an effect on the malfunction...but since the O2 sensor is recalled, the malfunction is already documented. This really should be a non-issue. But, of course, it IS an issue.

They are required to fix it under federal emission law. The faulty 02 sensor causes the car to not meet EPA specs.

Epa specs and federal emission law are the same are they not? If I recall what I read in the manual about their warranty it states that they will warrant any emissions related part for 3 years if the car does not meet emission specs. Something like that, dont have the thing in front of me.

You've got to love SOA. They beat the pants off of GM customer service. Thanks for the input guys!

Dear Mr. Halterman:

Thank you for contacting Subaru of America with your concerns. I have taken the liberty of contacting Byers Imports and I addressed your concerns with Paul L. As per Paul, they would like for you to contact them to re-schedule an appointment to take care of the WXW80 Recall for the Front Oxygen Sensor. Under this recall the only part that is involved is the oxygen sensor. As per Paul at dealer they would like the opportunity to address the recall.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to call us at 1-800-SUBARU3.

Thank you and best wishes!

Daisy Nunez

YOUR ORIGINAL MAIL:

Byers Imports in Columbus, OH has refused to honor your recall
WXW80 for a O2 sensor on my 2000 Impreza. They say that because I have a different air filter, and muffler that this is not covered. I spoke with Paul Lisska in their service department.

I am not making a warranty claim. I simply want them to follow the Subaru recall on this part that has been identified as defective.

Oh, now that I think about it. Should I go back to the same dealership?

They are really a highly regarded dealership in this area. Maybe I should give them a second chance. What do you think?

I would take it back there, and make them give me a free detail.

Nathan,

I would take it back to Byers to have this done. If you take it to Hatfield you may have to go through all this greif again to get your recall aproved. I have taken my car to Byers not because of any highly regarded service, but because they are the lesser of two evils Byers or Hatfield.

An update...

I took it back to Byers Imports, and they honored the recall. Not like they had much of a choice, but they were overly nice this time.

Good to hear. At least now they know you won't put up with their BS.
