Default Noobie question

I've searched and haven't seen any glossaries or dictionaries around that define what the different engines/transmission names mean and when they were built. Is there one somewhere?

I know with the older VW crowd, you can't turn around without walking into one, so I'm a little embarrassed that I'm asking...

The trans acronyms are pretty basic; I understood those. The engines are a different story because they have changed so much in size and ability over the last 20 years.

Not really. All the Impreza and Legacy 4 cylinder engines are Ej's. The next number designated discplacement. The rest of the alpha numeric designate generation, FI or NA, and trim levels of the car it came from.

Look at Stimpy's sticky in the conversions forum. It gives you a really good break out of both applied chassis code meanings and engine codes. Complete tranny codes are a challange to decipher. They also follow a formula, but after the first few digits, it's really obscure what's going on...

Well, Kostamojen has a list of engines, their names, and what power they put out right here on Nasioc.

With all due respect to North Ursalia, that web site has not been kept up to date and is not 100% correct either. Its one of the reasons I setup my list, along with actually being able to sift through SOA's engine specification lists now...

Good point there buddy! I wouldn't have even noticed the differences until I crosschecked.
