Default Living in Burlington...

Or someplace close.
I see a few of you live there, is it a decent place, is there cool people, bars, places to hang out?

Here's why, I ski in Vermont once a year and each time I go there I never want to leave. I couldn't just live in the middle of the mountains though, I am kind of apt to the city life also and the largest city is Burlington. So anything you can tell me would be helpful.

I work live just outside. (Never eva been to any bars)

But I`m a cool person. Just had no intrest in getting drunk and not being able to drive my car the following morning. I cherish my licence. But anyway. Feel free to pm me and I`ll send ya my mobile number!

Lee.

Are there any tech jobs left in the area? I was thinking about moving up there about 8 or 9 months ago and got a few call-backs about jobs... just wondering what it's like now.

I guess club is a better word than bar, I always can get a scope of nightlife by how many places there are to go.

I wondered what the tech industry is like there also. I think IBM is a big player, but I know they are flat and probably not hiring, much like the rest of the world. If you have anything else to add please do.

There are tons of bars in Burlington - it's a college town!

Not so good on the job scene, though. The states' largest employer, IBM, just laid off 500 from their Essex Junction plant. Unemployment state-wide, while lower than the national average, is at a 4-year high.

When I first saw your post I thought you meant Burlington, MA, which is where I work.

If so, I was going to say that it has a fairly decent shopping mall but little in the way of decent places to go in the evening.

I didn't know there was a Burlington Mass, anyways, yes I am talking about VT.
I deal with drunks now while living in Crackville, a suburb of Pittsburgh, classified by the "Dollar General" store down the street.
What about the lake, does it kick in the summer?

Summers ARE great (all the college kids go home). But housing has turned into a biznitch. There is a huge housing shortage in Burlington. You may want to live in Essex, Colchester, Winooski etc. anyways...

Default Burlington VT Rocks...

My girlfriend lives in Burlington. She's been there for about 6 years and she loves it. I love it too. Since it's a college town there's lots of good music and clubs and places to go. It's also a very beautiful place, with the Adirondack Mnts. across the lake to the west, and the Green Mtns. to the east. From her road she has a great view of snow covered Mt. Mansfield in the winter. That and it's close to some of the best ski/snowbaording in the east. My only gripe is all of the damn 4-way stop signs.

It's not a great place for tech jobs. It's better suited to artistic types and Phish fans. Besides being a system administrator for Burton Snowboards (my friend was), I don't think there are a lot of choices. IBM and General Dynamics seem to be the big ones. I applied to IBM and was very disappointed with the facilities. Think '70s decor. Lots of orange. Ick. And they wanted me to work with their HVAC system. I wanted to make robots. A poor fit really... So now I make robots in Boston, and drive a long way for snowboarding and nice views...

Jim

PS. Don't move to Burlington MA!

I drove up to Burlington last Friday at it was near white out conditions at times. It was my first time in snow with the RS. What a sweet car....
It was also snowing on my way back Monday. I rode at Smugglers Notch last saturday, and a friend said Sugarbush was good Monday. The conditions are not great, but it's getting better every day. Sugarbush's web site claims a foot of snow this week.

Personally, I'm a fan of VT Pub and Brewery. Nice atmosphere...but as has been said, there are tons of bars/clubs around because of UVM.

heh heh - I remember my first time in the snow with the RS, I felt the exact same way. The only way to stop it is if you beach it.

AWWW Geeez - something just occured to me, I all of a sudden remembered a dumb rule in Vermont. Thats the one where you can only have one drink in front of you at one time.
Not that its an issue these days for me, but man, that sucked when you tried to buy a round of shots or something.

BTW, this will not the deciding factor for me Although I remember arguing with the bartender for an hour on this topic.
I think it was at the Pickel Barrel in Killington.

I'm going to have to vote for Smuggs... simply because it's much farther north. I'm guessing they've had more time to make snow and build up a base... but I don't know anything about Mt. Snow.

I'm sure it's a fine place to work, but my only association with Burlington, MA is a big ass shopping mall. You do have the benifit of the housing being more affordable up there. And it's a bit less urban.
