I had the same problem happen to me. This is usually an intermittent problem which is a pain in the butt. i had it replaced under warranty without any questions. Since it is now malfunctioning, take it in, show them on the spot that it is not working before it magically starts working again. it only takes a minute to press one of those buttons and see that it does nothing. They should tell you that they will order the new head unit and will be a few days until it ets there. IN THAT TIME, frequently try ejecting the CD's as this problem my be intermittent and you could luck out one day and have it work. this is what i was able to do rather than let subaru pry my cd's out for me and ship them back.

Following the instructions, to the letter, in installing a Subaru single boost guage into my WRX wagon: when I removed the stereo unit from the dash, unplugged everything so I could get to the power supply plug, the one in which I was to plug into the boost guage, for illumination, as per the instructions, when I plugged the stereo back into its power supply, the 6 disc CD player no longer worked! All the other music sources worked: AM, FM, tape.

I looked for ways to 'reset' the device, here and in the manual. I did find a few suggestions here, but none of them worked.

I took the car to the Subaru dealer. They saw that the CD player did not work. They ordered me a new one. I just received a card the other day indicating that the replacement unit was in....

In the interim, I used the tape player through which to play my mp3 player (radio is not for me)! After a couple of days doing this, at one point when I ejected the tape adapter, I noticed that the display now indicated that CDs were loaded! Does the player now work? Sure enough it did!

This is probably an intermittent problem. If this happened once, it could happen again. I will be taking the car to the dealer and have them replace my current unit with the one that was ordered.

I suggest that you do the same. Make sure when you visit the dealer that the CD player is not functional.

I sold mine to a fellow i-clubber who stated he had the same problem.

Which one of the reset methods worked for you guys?

What a pain in the ass.

I bought one for my moms legacy from someone same problem when I got it.. everything worked but cd player.. figured it got bounced around in shipping.. took off the top plate (two little screws on the rear of the sides) and noticed that the changed platter. was trying to move and was bound up or something..
gave it a slight push down as it was trying to go and now it is working fine again for the last few days.
I have loaded and unloaded about 30 cd's so hopefullly it was a one time thing from shipping it.

Default dead cd unit

my changer isn't trying to do anything, sometimes it says its ejecting all the cd's, but nothing happens, no sounds, nothing. Otherwise, none of the buttons respond. I went to the dealer today and they are ordering me a replacement. Should arrive friday or early next week. The dealer seemed puzzled by it all, as well. Oh well. By the way, the dealer said I have "a good chance" of getting my cd's back, whatever that means! I guess I'll hope for the best!
