Angry Bad service @ Maine Mall Subaru!

Took the parents car in to have it serviced before I took it on a trip(cause my car sucks in the snow). Picked it up and immediately left on my trip, 1 1/2 hours into the drive I start to hear a noise like a wheel bearing. I get off at the next exit and check it out. Come to find out, ALL five lug nuts on BOTH front wheels are finger tight or looser. A couple were about to fall off completely.

Anyway, today I paid a visit to Maine Mall Motors to talk to the Manager. After describing my encounter and the fact that it had to have been there fault as the lug nuts were fine a month ago, the lady said and I quote "We're sorry, and we'll try and make sure it doesn't happen again". TRY... ummm, you'll TRY? With that I walked out. Not sure what I wanted to hear, but that sure as hell wasn't it.

Oh well, just had to rant!

That sucks, but it could be an honest "human" mistake. Luckily, no one was harmed, and maybe things at that dealer were improved.

Happy holidays,
Ed

Exclamation Ack...

OK, does that car have alloy wheels? Were the wheels rotated or removed as part of the service? All alloy wheels must be checked and torqued down at 25 miles and 250 miles after a rotation or if the wheels are removed for any reason otherwise the lugnuts run the risk of falling off. Before I started checking the lugnuts religiously I had a nasty encounter where I had the tires rotated (Enkei alloys) and 300 miles later the car felt a little odd. I checked and both front wheels were only held on with three lugnuts!

Whenever I swap between my Prodrives with RE730s (street/track) and steelies with WS50s (snow/rally) I always stop and retorque every 25 miles for the first 250 miles. I've found that if I go more than 100 miles after switching back to the Prodrives the lugnuts are finger loose. Go down to Autozone (Sears is too expensive and the one at Pep Boys sucks) and pick up a good 10-150 pound torque wrench for $35 and a socket that will fit Subaru lugnuts (3/4" on a 1/2" shaft I believe). I torque down to 75 pounds street and 85 pounds track.

Is this the dealership's fault? Yes and no. They should have told you to check and retorque the wheels. Every place I have ever had a rotation at before I started doing it myself has always told me to check and retorque. Sears even has it printed on their receipts. They may not have told you, however, because I believe it's in the manual. I could be mistaken on that.

Fear the Trunkmonkey. There is no cone.

Yeah, I suppose I was more pissed at the response I got. I've mellowed since then though. I usually torque the wheels myself once every couple of months to check them for the padres.

I imagine Subaru had the front wheels off to check the brakes and possibly the alignment. They are the stock Outback limited rims. Despite my experience with them, my parents say that they have gotten decent service in the past, and are still considering trading the Outback in and getting a WRX(I'm pushing for it too!) through them. Too bad the service manager wasn't a little more tactful in her wording though. I agree it would be nice to be reminded/informed to check the lug nuts after a time too. In addition, I did notice that the bussiness card she handed me had "1 free oil change" written on the back. It's not much, but at least it's an effort.

They've been good to me so far, but I personally don't trust them to do more than oil changes. The good thing is, they don't seem to care what mods I've done to the car, and have not complained yet, only complimented on how it sounds and stuff.

I have no real reason not to trust them, except I trust Exeter more That is why my 15k was done at Exeter..

...apparently not the only Mainer anymore...

Korey, nope, you're not the only Mainer. Do I smell garage day? Sorry, can't provide the garage quite yet.

subusmday, the WRX selection at either dealership is pretty slim. I had to order mine (from Maine Mall). Came in when they said it would, can't complain about the way I was treated on the new car purchase. Decent price. Not so great on the trade-in, so avoid it if you can. Of course, in the 6 weeks between ordering and picking up I put another 3000 miles on my trade, so my deal got better.

Had a grand old time with the WRX around Sugarloaf yesterday! Snow-covered roads... Must...keep...RPMs...under...4000...

Hehe its about time we have a garage day in Maine, I'm tired of driving 9,854 miles just to install things. Its also not a lot of fun installing stuff by myself..
